5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging Talk about Serving God and the Sword, November 4, 2013
This review is from: For God and Country (In That Order): Faith and Service for Ordinary Radicals (Paperback)
Logan paints a beautiful picture for us in the book "For God and Country [in that order]." He is a proponent for peace, and gives 44 examples of past military members who struggled with serving their country and their God. It is a great place to start the conversation that so many military members today struggle with, and opens doors to ask the tough questions that we've been told not to ask. The book is a great tool for peacemakers, and an easy read for those struggling with those questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent conversation-starter about faith and military service, December 1, 2013
This review is from: For God and Country (In That Order): Faith and Service for Ordinary Radicals (Paperback)
Logan Mehl-Laituri's second book is difficult to categorize, but accessible and thought-provoking. The author gives short biographical profiles of dozens of soldiers-- from the biblical Joshua to Iraq War veterans-- who have navigated the interplay between military service and service to God.

One of the great virtues of the book is its diversity. Instead of presenting arguments or conclusions, Mehl-Laituri lets the various stories stand for themselves, inserting his own voice only to draw attention to themes or to write brief, reflective prayers. Though many books tell Christians what they should think about military service, this one offers a variety of perspectives and invites the reader to consider each in turn. Thus it is a uniquely useful resource, especially for young people considering military service or wrestling (as Mehl-Laituri did) with the question of how to think about their own service in light of the gospel of peace.

The only flaws with the book are its formatting, which can be distracting, and the fact that the author possibly strove to include too much (there are, after all, nine appendices). But the book as a whole fills a much-needed gap between theological treatises and uncritical slogan-slinging. By showing what the church and the military have learned from one another over the centuries, Mehl-Laituri opens the conversation up for a new generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, thoughtful examination of the meaning of Faith for Christians in the military, November 9, 2013
This review is from: For God and Country (In That Order): Faith and Service for Ordinary Radicals (Paperback)
An absolutely wonderful work-- the author does a superb job in synthesizing and highlighting the various voices of the Christian tradition that have wrestled with the meaning of violence, service, and Christian faith. These are trying times for Christians-- for those both in and out of uniform-- who seek justice and peace in a world of seemingly increasing hatred and ideologically-driven conflict. Certainly, soldiers and others placed at the center of such conflict suffer the physical, psychological and moral trauma of service in such environments.

This book should be required reading for all Christians serving in the military-- and for all those who minister to them and share their struggles. "For God and Country" does a service for the Christian community by drawing forth the examples of the saints who have struggled through these issues before us. It is a blessing for all Christians-- those who serve, those who tend to those who serve, and all Christians seeking to bring God's kingdom closer to our broken world.
