Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"In 'For Juliana' Janet chronicles the determined efforts of her brave and tenacious family on an extraordinary journey of recovery.  From the early days after Juliana's accident, as doctors gave only grim pronouncements, Janet had the courage and intelligence to embrace two simple truths about her daughers' prospects for recovery from a traumatic brain injury:  There are no guarantees, but there is always hope.  This is a true story of tireless love and hope that only a mother could write." ~Jim Dolan, Executive Director, Laurus Foundation~

"This is the most uplifting and riveting tale I have ever heard.  I feel blessed every day that you have allowed the world into your life so that we may be better for it.  Praying for Juliana always." ~Facebook follower from the Philippines~

"When I read what Juliana has accomplished, what you as a mom have accomplished, and what Chris and your whole support system has accomplished I want to be a better person.  Every day I am stronger in my belief in' Team Juli', humanity, and God.  I will be grateful to you forever for that." ~Facebook follower from Oak Forest, IL~

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, Incredible story. July 29, 2011
Format:Paperback
I could never imagine such an uplifting story coming from something so tragic. This is an incredible story about the capability of the human spirit. I was given this book by a friend, and I am shocked this hasn't been on Oprah yet. If you've ever experienced a tragedy, or know someone who has, this is something you will want to read. There's so much that stays with you even when you are done reading it.

I have been a loyal reader of Mrs. Spencer's blogs about Juliana and her recovery since before Chris Medina went on American Idol. She is a fantastic writer who puts sincerity, honesty, and compassion in her writing and just about everything that she does. This is a wonderful read and will certainly remind you just how blessed you are.

More About the Author

Janet Spencer Barnes was born in Chicago Ridge, Illinois (1965) to Philip and Felicia Spencer. She grew up in Midlothian, Illinois but moved to England in 1984 when she eloped with her high school boyfriend, Chris Ramos as he joined the United States Air Force. They had 4 children together: Juliana (1986), Adam (1987), Dylan (1990) and Cheyenne (1991), but divorced in 1994.

During those years and the ones that followed, Janet spent 14 years attending 7 different colleges as they moved around, completing her education while continuing to work and raise her children, finally achieving one of her goals to receive her bachelors' degree in 1997. She also remarried that year to Donald Barnes and went on to have two more children, Delaney (2000) and Mackenzie (2003).

Janet's passion for writing was always present with many short stories, poems and novel beginnings, yet life always seemed too busy to follow her dream of becoming a published author. As her eldest daughter, Juliana Ramos's wedding to Chris Medina approached, it seemed life would continue getting busier and writing would still not be more than a hobby even though Juliana was a constant encouragement of that dream.

Then suddenly, everything changed on October 2, 2009 when Juliana was in a near fatal car accident that left her fighting for her life with a traumatic brain injury. Janet's life was forever changed from how she would parent, cope, and spend each waking moment. She chronicled the daily struggle to adjust to the new family dynamics as well as all of the incredible things that happened as a result in a Facebook blog, For Juliana. The followers grew from several hundred to several thousand with prayer chains all over the country. Then Juliana's story went 'viral' as she gained national attention when her fiance auditioned for American Idol and told the world how he stayed by her side when she needed him most. The Facebook following jumped quickly to 30,000 people in countries all over the world.

"For Juliana, Almost to the Almost One Penny at a Time" is Janet's first published work (June 2011) which represents the first year of Juliana's recovery and depicts the true labor of love invested into Juliana's recovery by everyone around her. Now, with all of her kids supporting her new career, Janet is working on publishing other, previously crafted works as well as publishing the second year of her blog of Juliana's recovery.

Janet asked Juliana during her recovery, "if you were told that both Chris and I could have the careers we always dreamed of, but you would have to give up years of your life for us to have it, would you do it?" She quickly answered, "Yes". Janet smiled sadly and said, "You just did."
