Book Description

When retired family doctor Sam Moore gets a call from the coroner to come to The Twin Sisters Inn to consult on a murder victim, he's puzzled. Why would Lou call him? He's retired now, and just wants to spend time with his beloved Rachel, his grandsons, and to work in his gardens.

Within days, the body count increases and Sam is a prime suspect, so he calls on a peculiar talisman—his brother Billy's glowing green marble—to whisk him back in time in search of clues before the killer strikes again. Book 3 in the Moore mystery series.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Keeps August 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
For Keeps is a unique addition to the Sam Moore mystery series written by Aaron Lazar. For those unfamiliar with the series, Sam Moore is a retired doctor who is a reluctant participant in unraveling mysteries tied to his family. A mysterious green marble, found in his garden years before, is a conduit to the afterlife where he can commune with his long dead brother, Billy. In For Keeps, Sam faces the most important and demanding murder investigations: the violent death of an ex-lover, inexplicable execution of a dear friend, and the demise of a beloved family member.

The pace of the novel is a rollercoaster ride with so many thrilling dips and climbs, you read the book on the edge of your seat, biting your fingernails. The "who-done-it" part is actually resolved within the first fifty pages. Even the motive is known. The book then revolves around Sam's futile attempts to use the mysterious properties of the marble to go back in time and tweak events so he can still save three lives so important to him. Sam learns that even slight changes in the past can have dramatic changes in the present. Each subsequent `present' turns into a nightmare for Sam. With Billy's help he manages to invoke one possible future which can fix some problems, but adds new parts to his `present' life which are confusing.

The tension Aaron Lazar establishes in the first part of the book is physically exhausting, especially after the final murder occurs. Each trip to the past will have the reader praying for some miraculous resolution. Be warned, once you start reading this book, it is nearly impossible to put it down.

I suggest starting it on a Saturday morning so you might have a chance to get your weekend responsibilities completed on Sunday.

I highly recommend this novel for young and old adults.

For mystery lovers, For Keeps won't disappoint. There are plenty of deliciously gruesome twists and a fast-paced narrative that makes this book perfect for any reader looking for an engaging and quick read. The story includes a number of thread, including life-after-death, Satanism, the paranormal, domestic violence, and mental illness. Although Lazar pulls no punches with the plot - there is plenty of blood, cadavers, and no shortage of bad guys, somehow he manages to keep the work warm, leaving the reader energised, rather than drained by it all. Part of that is due to the exceptional characterisation of Sam Moore, who drives the action through his integrity and family orientation. He's just such so nice! This becomes obvious early on in the story as Sam sees to one of his former patients whose blood sugar is low. At times, the supernatural elements do stretch credulity, but because of the strength of the characterisation and the clean, rapid progression of the plot line, even a stoical, naturalistic type reader like me is willing to suspend judgement and just go with it. After all, it feels good. For Keeps is a beautifully written novel that will delight existing Sam Moore (and Aaron Lazar) fans, while drawing in new readers looking for a truly enjoyable mystery experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Keeps is a Keeper August 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Sam Moore is a retired doctor with a wife that has MS, one daughter and one son, and 3 grandchildren. He is enjoying his retirement with his family, friends, and his beloved garden. One day while out buying more plants he receives a phone call from his friend/former colleague, medical examiner Lou. She asks him to come to the local Inn; she has a murder victim she needs his help/opinion with. Upon arrival and looking over the victim he realizes that he knows her. Back during his med school days while on spring break in Miami he had a brief fling with her. The murder of this woman, one he knew briefly in his younger years really bothers him...a lot. Within a few days another person he knows is murdered followed by a loved one.

Sam has in his possession a green marble that he carries in his pocket; one that allows him contact with his murdered brother. With this marble and the help of his brother, it allows him to do some remote viewing and sometimes even interact with the past. He decides that he will use this marble along with the help of his brother Billy to go back in time to try to prevent these murders and get his beloved back. Unfortunately things are not that simple and every time he changes something in the past the future is impacted in ways he never anticipated and not for the good.

This is a story about the `what if' question we all have thought about one time or another. What if we could go back and make different choices? We all have at one time said to ourselves `if I only knew then what I know now'.

This is the 1st book in the series that I have read and I must say "wow". Mr. Lazar is such a gifted writer that even though I started with book 3, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and could barely put it down until the last page was turned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent November 13, 2014
Wow! For Keeps by Aaron Paul Lazar is magnificent. I am constantly amazed by the characters, writing style and story lines that make up a Lazar mystery. Even when I figure out some of the intricacies of the plot, we all do in a good mystery, I am thrown a huge curve ball that changes my perspective on everything. In this book, I really did NOT want to like Ginger or Susan, but Sam did. And Sam made me see them in such a different perspective, that their transformation was a blessing. I'm not going to lie, as a Sam Moore Mystery fan, parts of this nearly ended me. I found myself talking to the characters, even the spiritual ones, trying to move this story in the direction that I wanted it to go. Instead, Lazar flipped the tables on me and I am super happy with the way he did it. I cannot wait to see where Sam takes me next, what he picks for me in the garden, what books he is reading and what songs are on the radio. They all seem like details, but its these details that I share with the characters that draws me even further into this world. Another amazing read!

More About the Author

Aaron Paul Lazar wasn't always a mystery writer. It wasn't until eight members of his family and friends died within five years that the urge to write became overwhelming. "When my father died, I lost it. I needed an outlet, and writing provided the kind of solace I couldn't find elsewhere."

Lazar created the Gus LeGarde mystery series, with the founding novel, DOUBLE FORTÉ (2004), a chilling winter mystery set in the Genesee Valley of upstate New York. Like Lazar's father, protagonist Gus LeGarde is a classical music professor. Gus, a grandfather, gardener, chef, and nature lover, plays Chopin etudes to feed his soul and thinks of himself as a "Renaissance man caught in the 21st century." This book has since be rereleased in 2012 as an "author's preferred edition," via Twilight Times Books.

The creation of the series lent Lazar the comfort he sought, yet in the process, a new passion was unleashed. Obsessed with his parallel universe, he now lives, breathes, and dreams about his characters, and has written ten LeGarde mysteries in eight years. (UPSTAGED - 2005; TREMOLO: CRY OF THE LOON - 2007 Twilight Times Books; MAZURKA - 2009 Twilight Times Books, FIRESONG - 2011, DON'T LET THE WIND CATCH YOU - 2013, VIRTUOSO - 2014, with more to come.) The author has just completed his twenty-first novel.

One day while rototilling his gardens, Lazar unearthed a green cat's eye marble, which prompted the new paranormal mystery series featuring Sam Moore, retired country doctor and passionate gardener. The green marble, a powerful talisman, connects all three of the books in the series, whisking Sam back in time to uncover his brother's dreadful fate fifty years earlier. (HEALEY'S CAVE, 2010; TERROR COMES KNOCKING, 2011; FOR KEEPS, 2012) Lazar intends to continue both series.

Lazar's books feature breathless chase scenes, nasty villains, and taut suspense, but are also intensely human stories, replete with kids, dogs, horses, food, romance, and humor. The author calls them, "country mysteries," although reviewers have dubbed them "literary mysteries."

"It seems as though every image ever impressed upon my brain finds its way into my work. Whether it's the light dancing through stained-glass windows in a Parisian chapel, curly slate-green lichen covering a boulder at the edge of a pond in Maine, or hoarfrost dangling from a cherry tree branch in mid-winter, these images burrow into my memory cells. In time they bubble back, persistently itching, until they are poured out on the page."

In 2009, Kodak gave him up for grabs, and during the year off before he landed in his coveted new job with KB America, he had time to explore and reconnect with his environment. Little did he know that several trips to the Adirondack Mountains would reawaken his passion for that part of the country. Two new books were written in that time frame, starting yet another mystery series, Tall Pines Mysteries. The first two combooks in the series, FOR THE BIRDS - 2011 and ESSENTIALLY YOURS - 2012 have been winning literary awards. Keep an eye out for SANCTUARY (2014), and MURDER ON THE SACANDAGA (2015), coming via Twilight Times Books.

In between all the novels, Lazar found time to issue three writing guides based on his many years of writing advice blogs, entitled WRITE LIKE THE WIND, volumes 1-3. These are available in eBook and audio book.

In his twenty-first book, Lazar has jumped genre. THE SEACREST - OCT 2013 -, a love story, is poised to capture hearts across the globe.

The author lives on a ridge overlooking the Genesee Valley in upstate New York with his wife, mother-in-law, two dogs, and cat. He finds grandfathering one of the most precious and important times of life, and spends as much time as possible with Julian, Gordon, and Isabella.

Lazar maintains several websites and blogs, was the Gather Saturday Writing Essential host for three years, writes his monthly "Seedlings" columns for the Voice in the Dark literary journal and the Future Mystery Anthology Magazine. He has been published in Absolute Write as well as The Great Mystery and Suspense Magazine. See excerpts and reviews here:
