Product Description

Influential pianist Marc Cary served as NEA Jazz Master Abbey Lincoln s accompanist for 12 years. His beautiful solo piano debut is the first instrumental tribute to Lincoln s one-of-a-kind compositional genius!

In a field of increasing vocalist interpretations of the songs of Abbey Lincoln, Marc Cary s wholly instrumental solo piano treatment of these timeless pieces marks an important first in the history of jazz. Has SoundScanned over 10,000 albums across his career. Cary has received strong endorsement from Jean- Philippe Allard, producer of all of Abbey Lincoln s classic Verve recordings, which will give this tribute a very special standing among her many fans. Named one of DownBeat s 25 for the Future of Jazz. Has recorded and toured with such diverse artists as Shirley Horn, Erykah Badu, D Angelo, Q-Tip, Ani DiFranco , Arthur Taylor, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Wynton Marsalis, and Roy Hargrove. This is shaping up to be the year of Marc Cary at Motéma! In addition to this tribute, he will release a new Focus Trio studio album (October 2013), and his wicked keyboard skills will be heard on exceptional new Motéma releases by Will Calhoun (May 2013), David Murray (June 2013), and Charnett Moffett (July 2013).

Review

One of the most multi-dimensional players on the scene. --Downbeat

A pianist with a steadily growing reputation and a passion for expansive thinking, blends world-music strains and contemporary jazz. --The New Yorker

Marc Cary approaches the piano trio tradition from a predominantly rhythmic standpoint, but with ample evidence of harmonic sophistication. --New York Times

I've known Marc since he was 4 years old. Watched him grow up and remember when he began just plucking the piano keys and then began to study piano seriously. I remember him going to New York after his 18th birthday to pursue his destiny and after arriving planting many seeds and through thick and thin never giving up on his dream. Watching Marc through the years has been like watching a caterpillar metamorphism into a butterfly. He is and has an amazing talent; he and the piano become one when he plays. The seeds he planted early in his life are still producing a harvest and with every passing year, I believe one day in the future the harvest will be so plentiful he will not have enough room to store it. For the Love of Abbey is Marc's dedication to a giant in the history of jazz who recognized Marc's amazing talent and hooked her star to his and this CD reveals Marc's gratitude to a jazz legend who invited him along for the ride. To Marc I would say - "you're somewhere in the future and you look much better than you look right now." Thanks for sharing your beautiful talents and music with me and the world. Everyone who knows Marc's music should buy the CD and get their jazz-loving friends to buy it too.

Marc Cary is amazing! His hands and spirit are gifted and if Abbey were here she would say, "Marc, well done!"
For the Love of Abbey is powerful and beautifully played. This CD holds the songs of Abbey's heart.
If you love exceptional piano that moves you into a soothing place, where the dynamic inflections and phrasing of Ms. Lincoln are played with passion and where Music is the Magic for those of us Down Here Below, Where Love Evolves ... you get the feeling, then be sure to pick up a copy of this splendid homage to Abbey Lincoln classically performed by Marc Cary.

I admit that I originally skipped this album at the time of it's release. I'm a fan of Marc Cary, I have almost all of his CD releases. I was not sure I would appreciate an entirely solo recording though. So I instead started looking forward to Marc Cary's following album Four Directions released a few months later. BUT I had just so happened to have been listening to a classical music album by Maurice Ravel Ravel: The Piano Concertos / Miroirs and the last suite on that album called Miroirs an entirely solo piano work caught my attention and I really liked it. So I had second thoughts on For the Love of Abbey and decided to buy it anyway. And I'm glad I did, I was afraid that solo piano would just be really boring, but it's not. Its easy to forget that it's a solo effort, because theres so much interesting things going on. I'm not a musician, so it's hard to describe how Marc Cary plays a piano in technical terms, but I think of the words "expressive", "melodic", and "passionate", and theres not one dull moment to complain about. I like listening to this album most while relaxing after work with a beer, or while studying.

This album is for me easily the best jazz that I've heard from a 'new' pianist in years. What Marc Cary did on "Abbey" was not just a tribute to an individual but also a credit to what's made him an artist himself, and he made every note of it sound fresh.

Didn't really think that I would enjoy a solo piano project and that it would keep my interest. I was pleasantly surprised. Was already a fan of Marc's music, but never on solo piano. I really enjoyed this album.
