Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–4—Polacco has created another picture book filled with warmth and love. A student teacher, Danielle, rescues a kitten, and when she gets a teaching job that takes her to Port Townsend, WA, and a house on a bay, they settle in. Then Autumn is wounded and lost in a thunderstorm, and despite Danielle's class's efforts to find her, she appears to be gone for good. Everyone is amazed when she returns weeks later, fit as a fiddle. Danielle eventually meets the man who has cared for her pet, and they fall in love. This is a lovely story, with a strong sense of place and illustrated with Polacco's trademark patterns and facial structures. While this story is too long for a traditional storytime, it could be used successfully as a one-on-one read.—Susan E. Murray, Glendale Public Library, AZ

You'll want to go out and adopt a kitten after reading For the Love of Autumn. This charming storybook brings to life the joy and fun of having a kitty for a pet.

The story is about Danielle, a young teacher with a kitten named Autumn. The gray kitty shares Danielle's life, pouncing at her ankles as she walks, and curling up with her in the evening with a bowl of popcorn. When the young woman gets a new job in a seaside village, Autumn "helps" her pack and move into her new cottage. Autumn disappears one stormy night and Danielle's students help her find the kitten, and her true love, as well.

The heart of this book, as in other Patricia Polacco books for kids, is in the illustrations. The delicate full-color watercolors bring the story to life, and capture tiny moments like Autumn leaping toward a dragonfly on a flower. The faces of Danielle and her students show such expression. Even without the depth in the story, the book is worth it just for the artwork.

Other good choices from Polacco: The Lemonade Club, Ginger and Petunia, I Can Hear the Sun (Picture Puffins), When Lightning Comes in a Jar, Mommies Say Shh! and The Bee Tree.

This was a very sweet book. It told a good story about a kitten that had wandered to another home. How would the two owners reconcile this? All ends happily. The drawings are nicely colored, detailed and the basic story has a lot of depth. All together a good satisfying read for all.

What an adorable book!! As an animal lover and cat (not owner, of course, but friend, I guess;>) I found this book especially touching and sweet and spot-on. It's obvious Polacco had a cat of her own and knew just how they can "help you unpack" and "scatter pencils everywhere" and be "the heartbeat of the home."

The illustrations of Autumn are completely precious! I'm not sure I was as big a fan of the people illustrations, but they fit well enough.

I adored the story (even if it was a tad predictable). And even though the ending seemed a bit too perfect/coincidental, I didn't mind, because, well, why *can't* things sometimes turn out so perfectly?

I probably should give this four stars, because of these "issues" (they really aren't issues though), and because I did feel that the writing style wasn't anything amazing. But, the story itself wins out and I have to give it five!

This children's book author is a wonderful and creative storyteller. She has written so many books over the years. Her tales of family and her heritage seems to pour out of her books in colorful illustrations and words. I did have the opportunity to hear her speak and I really enjoyed her stories about her family and how she admits there is a fine line between fact and fiction. Are her stories true. Maybe. Maybe not she says! Books are bits and pieces of memories and our own impressions about people and events. Ps. This is a sweet book and love story. ;)

This was a very touching, very sweet story about a woman and her love for her kitten. She gets the kitten near Halloween this way she names her Autumn. They bond together and can't live without one another. Even moving out of state together as the woman 'grows up'. She gets a teaching job and she tells her students about Autumn. One day in a major storm Autumn comes up missing. The class and woman try and find Autumn and finally give up finding her. BUT with the turn of events the woman not only finds her precious Autumn but a new family as well!

The first one I got came extremely damaged, the paper cover was wrinkled and had obvious signs of water damage...which was clearly from the warehouse seeing how nothing else in the box was damaged and the box was in perfect condition with no water damage or dents. I called Amazon, they quickly appologized and rushed me a new one, even though I didn't need a rush on it. The second one came in good condition and quickly, no complaints with service or replacement.

I bought this for my daughter, Autumn. It is a lovely story about how a kitten brings two single people together, sharing the love of a kitten. It goes through a range of emotion, and is not a short picture book, but the story flows and teaches a lesson. It is an excellent addition to your library from renowned author, Patricia Polacco, a great children's writer.
