This is volume two of Dr. Carson's attempt to help Christians grow in their relationship with God. In the process the reader's biblical literacy will be raised dramatically. Reading this devotion daily with the four assigned readings, (usually a chapter each in length), you will read the New Testament and Psalms twice and the rest of the Bible once. This was true with volume one as well. Dr. Carson's comments on one of the readings each day will reveal things in Scripture you may have never seen before. He will also give applications to the reader's life from the devotion. This is true as well in volume one. I suggest to the publisher to make volumes one and two a boxed set. It will save the reader another order for a devotion he or she will want after purchasing the first volume. Out of all the devotions I have read, volume two along with its predecessor leads one back to reading the Bible. I highly recommed this volume as well as the first. If your devotional life with God has grown stale, or you want your relationship with God to grow stronger, you could not do better than buying both volumes of Dr. Carson's devotionals

Carson understands that spiritual growth requires more than selecting various texts from around the Bible and applying them to daily personal issues of Christian living, important though that may be. He understands that the Christian believer benefits enormously by seeing how the entire Bible fits together in the flow of salvation-history. Recognizing that linear historical analysis validates the biblical materials is not just an academic exercise, but strengthens faith in the God of the Bible. But, Carson then returns to the issue of application, both at personal and societal levels.
Carson helps Christians to properly interpret OT texts in light of New Covenant fulfillment. He also performs admirably in his notes on passages in the NT pertaining to soteriology. That in itself makes the book worth much more than its purchase price.
I highly recommend these books for any person who wants to grow in her/his understanding and application of the Bible. In addition, these books are of inestimable value for teachers and preachers in that the readings consistently show how to make even rather obscure passages accessible for students and parishoners.

Love of God is an excellent companion/guide to reading through the Bible in a year. Although Amazon does not differentiate, there are 2 versions. This newer tends to have commentary on the Old Testament while the first "For the Love of God" focuses on the New Testament selections.

Carson has wisdom that I was continually surprised with each new devotion. He has an amazing ability to place a chapter in its biblical context, helping the reader understand why it's important. His writing is very well crafted as he puts profound concepts in simple terms. I highly recommend this book for the spiritual edification of all believers and unbelievers alike.

To me, reading 'Joe-was-having-a-bad-day' or 'I-used-to-throw-rocks-in-a-stream-when-I-was-a-little-kid' devotionals are a complete and total waste of time.

If you want to something that has Theological and Ecclesiastical weight and heft and strength, try this volume on for size.

ALMOST as good as Surgeons devotionals.

The same goes for the other volume in the set.

Try reading BOTH for each day.

They will make you think and, prayerfully, make you want more!

A daily devotional reading written by D.A.Carson, a NT scholar and Biblical theology scholar, certainly have a unique deep insight. In order to build up a spiritual life, a Christian should spend more time on Bible studying, while precise understanding of the Scriptures can help us to hit the target. D.A. Carson’s sharp view point can always help us correctly discover the divine wisdom of the God. Before reading his each day’s devotional writing, I suggest one should carefully read the chapters assigned by Carson, so that we can follow his train of thought. After reading each day’s message, many times I can compose an unexpected outline of my own sermon.I also like the Bible reading chart which including the "family reading" and "private reading", because as a Christian, we both need individual relation with God, as well as family fellowship, so that we can share our thoughts with our loved ones. And this also can meet the title of Carson's book as "For the Love of God"

This book assists those who would be committed to reading, studying and reflecting on God's word each day, to be disciplined. Typical of Don Carson, each page of commentary is informative, insightful, thought provoking and challenging. Don packs a whole lot of information and a whole lot of punch into each page. Each day the reader is allocated one sequential Old Testament passage and one NT passage and Don comments on either one of those passages.
Anyone serious about daily Bible reading and study should have this book as their "daily companion".

If you are looking for a devotional that is based totally on scripture and not on circumstances or emotions, this is the book for you. This will take you through the Bible in a year. Dr. Carson is an extremely gifted theologian and author, and there is nothing else like this out there. He was my son's professor, and I can tell you that you will not find a more unique, insightful, or enlightening devotional anywhere. He also has a brain second only to God, so don't be surprised if you have to look up the meaning of some words! :>)
