4.0 out of 5 stars A fun tribute, filled with genuine love July 5, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
As with most tribute albums, about half of the tracks here are people trying their best to sound like the artist...which in Harry's case is just not possible...and the rest are 'rethinkings' of the songs. It's hit-and-miss, with some wonderful performances (Ringo, Adrian Belew, Marshall Crenshaw) some inspired contributions (Victoria Williams, Randy Newman) and some real duds (Fred Schneider's "Coconut" is just awful). But it doesn't really matter, because everyone here genuinely loves Nilsson, and it shows.

4.0 out of 5 stars Harry Hurrah! May 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As others have noted, tribute albums can be hit and miss affairs. Thankfully, this one is mostly hits; lots of great tunes done with reverence and a few twists. Personally, I absolutely love the way that Fred Schneider belts out "Coconut." I think Harry would have approved. Randy Newman does a gorgeous take on "Remember," Aimee Mann's version of "One" is outstanding, and the Roches and Mark Johnson send "Spaceman" into a thrilling orbit. On the downside; I never liked "Joy" and even Joe Ely can't save that one. And anything that Victoria Williams sings only causes me to skip to the next track. Not sure if this CD will appeal to all diehard Nilsson fans, but for anyone curious about this legendary singer-songwriter, this is a very good quality tribute album that may motivate you to check out the originals.

4.0 out of 5 stars A labor of love. December 30, 2002
Format:Audio CD
Tribute albums are notoriously a mixed bag. Often, they fall into two categories: big names stars making mincemeat of classic songs, or unknown artists living up to their well-deserved status. This, however, is a very, very pleasant exception to these rules. Even the very annoying Randy Newman acquits himself well with a truly moving rendition of "Remember." All of which serves as a reminder of just how good Nilsson really was, both in terms of lyrics and melodies. Sure, there are duds here, like the goddawful trashing of "Coconut" by the semi-talented B-52's frontman Fred Schneider (it's almost too painful to listen to), but there are real gems, too, like Adrien Belew's playful version of "Me and My Arrow," Marc Cohn's "Turn on Your Radio," and a version of "Spaceman" by the Roches which bests the original. "Jump Into the Fire" becomes a Gospel classic, too, at the hands of LaVern Baker.
What shines through most of all is the deep affection these performers, by and large, have for the music and for Harry. The liner notes are wonderful, too. For me, it reopened the door to Harry that had been closed for so long.

5.0 out of 5 stars The longer I listen, the more I enjoy this CD. March 6, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I bought this as a cassette about a year ago...I'm in my early 50's about the same age as Harry Nilsson would be. I enjoyed his music then, and have really come to enjoy this tape. I have since purchased it on CD, and highly recommend it to everyone. I don't like every cut, but by and large enjoy the bulk of what is on it. I use the music to exercise by and would suggest those who like H.Nilsson should purchase it. My favorite 2 cuts are the Marc Cohn and Jimmy Webb ones.....I'm glad I found it by accident. You should buy it with purpose. Thank you!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great! Not at all what I expected, and much, much better! December 17, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Don't get me wrong, I like Harry Nilsson's work well enough. It's just always seemed so ... light. The arrangements on this album though, they really bring his songs to life; and in the process, they accentuate what a really good song-writer he was. We picked up a tape version of this album in the bargin bin at Border's. What a find! It's quickly become one of our favorites; and the more we listen to it, the better it seems.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love Harry Nilsson February 15, 2013

Not crazy about others performing his catalogue, but offers more musical compositions showcasing genius of Harry Nillson. Thought that HN was a remarkable musician.
