3.0 out of 5 stars For richer, for poorer, till death do us part May 2, 2011
"For My Wife" is a mixed bag as a documentary about the struggle for same-sex marriage. Charlene Strong tells her moving story of how she faced boundaries when she lost her longtime female partner at the hospital&the funeral home. She had Power of Attorney, yet she wasn't treated as next of kin. Charlene Strong, like her surname, showed real strength in her time of grief and loss. Insult adds to injury when she's treated as if she didn't exist. It is the ultimate devaluation as a person. Because she isn't a man, she is ignored.

Charlene later testifies in defense of a civil unions law in Washington state. She finds herself equated with those who abuse animals, dead bodies, and children... dehumanized after the loss of her partner.

The strengths of this documentary are Charlene's own story, as well as the legislative hearings in Washington. Unfortunately, the discussion of her media campaign bogs it down. It becomes more of a lecture on PR than a personal story. How she presented herself on CBS is discussed, rather than how Charlene met her partner, when she came out, etc. An entire aspect of her life is dismissed. Sadly, her late partner isn't discussed that much either. If there had been more emphasis on the personal stories of Charlene and her partner, this would've been a stronger film. Instead, it's more about how to present yourself to the media as an activist.

5.0 out of 5 stars A film everone should see October 12, 2010

This film is amazing - heart rending and motivating all at once. We were so moved and impressed that we have arranged to show it at the Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival 2010 where it is headlining on the Saturday night. Fantastically well made, gripping and true, this story about the making of an activist from the roots of personal tragedy is extraordinary. You don't have to be gay to appreciate this film - you just have to be human. It gives us all hope that our actions can lead to change - an inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Link to published review of "For My Wife..." October 4, 2010
"For My Wife..." tells the story of how Charlene Strong became an advocate for gay marriage with powerful, tender authenticity. It is, without a doubt, one of the most moving and unpretentious films ever made about the effects of marriage inequality in America.
