Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this rote, camera-ready recitation of the party platform, Democratic National Committee Chair Wasserman Schultz hews close to official talking points. The youngest woman ever elected to the Florida State Legislature, only the third woman to head up the DNC, and a cancer survivor, Wasserman Schultz&'s personal story is an impressive one, but little of the will and power of the person appears on these pages. Instead, she and co-writer Fenster provide a run-down of last year&'s popular campaign issues, including immigration, women&'s rights, health-care, and, of course the economy, outlining the official Democratic position on each, while explaining how and why the Republican party is the wrong choice for America. The chapter on foreign policy neglects to mention the hugely unpopular drone program, and no reference to the Keystone XL pipeline sullies Wasserman Schultz&'s pristine take on the Democratic environmental platform. Anyone longing for a retread of last year&'s campaign will enjoy this defense of the winning position; however, political junkies and non-partisan observers will find nothing more than the status quo. Agent: Joelle Delbourgo, Joelle Delbourgo Associates Inc. (Oct.)

From Booklist

Elected to the Florida legislature at 26, Schultz was determined to be a children’s advocate even before she’d started her own family. At the end of her eight-year career in state office, Schultz went on to Congress and has continued her child-centric perspective in legislation on improved public education and affordable health care, gun control and reproductive rights, immigration policy and foreign policy. She recalls her experiences with the legislative process of partisanship and gridlock that threatens any efforts at constructive legislation, ultimately at the cost of American children. Noting how few women with young children are members of Congress, Schultz appeals for resolution of political discord and issues a challenge to adopt a parent’s perspective on how lawmaking or the lack of it will affect future generations. Throughout, she offers remembrances of her three children growing up—constant reminders of the significance of her job to the future of her children and other children. An interesting perspective on parenting and lawmaking. --Vanessa Bush

For the Next Generation: A Wake-Up Call to Solve Our Nation's Problems by Debbie Wasserman and Julie M. Fenster

"For the Next Generation" is a matter-of-fact book that addresses national policy issues with the ultimate goal of making our nation stronger for the next generation. Congresswoman and chair of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz provides the readers with an enlightening book on current issues and how to resolve them. The book is straightforward and you get enough of Wasserman's engaging personality to keep it from becoming a strictly political talking-points book. This informational 320-page book includes the following fourteen chapters: 1. Strengthening the Economy (So Our Children Don't Have To), 2. Safety Nets, Built to Last, 3. Health Care: A Right Worth Fighting For, 4. A Superpower for Peace, 5. We Know the Drill, 6. Infrastructure Powers Economic Growth, 7. Kids Learn Best When Parents Teach First, 8. Keeping Kids Healthy and Safe, 9. Putting the Fight Back in Women's Rights, 10. America's Promise to Immigrants, 11. Civil Rights: A March Without End, 12. Aiming for Sensible Policy on Guns, 13. Discourse, Not Discord, and 14. To Belong to Something.

Positives:
1. Direct, well-written and accessible book. Intended for the masses.
2. Covers a wide range of national policies of interest.
3. A pleasant and even-handed tone throughout. Wasserman though having strong convictions does not throw anybody under the bus. She takes a polite, as matter-of-fact approach. Her engaging personality comes out when she speaks of her family, and those things that drive her politics.
4. Solid format and approach. Each chapter covers a national policy issue of interest.

For the Next Generation: A Wake-Up Call to Solving Our Nation's Problems
By Debbie Wasserman Shultz and Julie M. Fenster
(St. Martin's Press, 308 pages, $25.99)

Leftists wishing a complete treatment of progressive chants, tics, talking points, sacraments, secret handshakes, and calamitous policies can find them in For the Next Generation, a tedious and repetitious 300-page walk through the entire catalogue of leftist delusions. Every failed idea since Rousseau is here lovingly lifted up as part of the path to an American paradise.

This over-long leftist catechism was ghost-written by Julie M. Fenster for Debbie Wasserman Schultz, an aged-in-the barrel leftist who is now a member of the U.S. House representing a South Florida district between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, which includes South Beach. She's also chairwomanperson of the Democratic National Committee, so readers can be assured everything she says here is party line.

Republicans wishing an economical guide to the bad ideas and nobbling policies they're running against need only keep a dog-eared copy of this gospel according to Debbie at hand. Conservative and patriotic Americanos wishing to count the ways leftists plan to assault everything they believe in and to turn human nature on its head could do so with this one-stop guide. The book has no other value.

The subtitle to a book that could more descriptively been titled "Leftists Are Us," is "A Wake-Up Call to Solving Our Nation's Problems. This from a woman who, on the evidence of the policies she whoops up, slept through her economics classes at college.

Same old same old. Not much new here. If you ever listen to her,,the book just repeats things she has already said. Some things about her personal experiences are new but not all that interesting.

After reading Ms. Wasserman Schultz's book, I am struck by how unbelievably vapid, uninformed, and incompetent the leading members of the Democrat Party have become in these recent years. Their only main interest is raising truckloads of money for themselves and their no-nothing party candidates without solving one American, let alone international, problem.
First, Ms. Wasserman opens her book discussing our economy and the $787 billion TARP program. She never discusses how the Democrat Party never prosecuted any of the banksters on Wall Street, hoping upon hope that if they didn't, the Wall Street fraudsters would pore money into the greedy Dems coffers. . . which they did. No one ever asks why there were no Congressional hearings on the failed TARP. We all know the real reason; $450 billion of that went to bail-out the super-rich on Wall Street, and the Democrats, except for union auto workers, would never think of bailing-out anyone else!
Dear Debbie, since you are the head of the Democrat National Committee and you know nothing about how the U.S. economy works let me clue you. Right now, the Fortune 1000 have 2700 billion dollars in loot on their books, $1100 billion of that is overseas. If you goofballs in the Democratic Party set-up a "Temporary Tax-Reduction Program" much of that $1100 billion dollars would be repatriated to the U.S. by reducing the marginal corporate tax rate from 35% to say 17%. That new tax revenue stream could be used to fund hundreds of much needed infrastructure programs, thus creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs.
Ms. Wasserman's book on Chapter 5 discusses American's energy policy. Once again, the head of the DNC, of all people, is totally gullible and clueless. Dear Debbie, there is no energy crisis--THE WORLD'S DROWNING IN NATURAL GAS!
