Book Description

A Cinderella story . . .

Claire Kendrick didn't know what to think when she was summoned to the 50th floor to meet the president of Callahan, International. As handsome, blue-eyed Nick Callahan explained her special assignment --- writing an article about him for CEO Magazine --- Claire's apprehensions grew. There was something he wasn't telling her, something odd that she couldn't put her finger on. What did he really want from her?

Her green eyes, golden hair, and striking beauty were the first things that had caught Nick's attention. Then he had her background checked out, and he was doubly impressed. Claire Kendrick was a smart, hard-working, loyal employee. She was also supporting her mother, who needed expensive full-time medical care. All in all, Claire was the perfect candidate for the position Nick needed to fill.

While researching the article on Nick, Claire found herself awed by the success story of the man who'd made his first million before he was thirty. His brilliant blue eyes were mesmerizing, his sexy smile distracting, his hidden, kind nature surprising and admirable. And then, out of the blue, Nick offered her a startling proposition. He would support Claire and her mother in exchange for services rendered --- as a wife and mother to his children!

It would have been a fantasy, a dream come true, a Cinderella story --- except for one oversight. Could Claire exist in a marriage of convenience? What kind of marriage would it be . . . without love?

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for this book....... March 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I got this book as a freebie and it probably won't be my last one from this author. The book was enjoyable, characters were likeable and it was a nice and easy read. The plot of the book is not a new theme; I've read tons of books with similar "marriage of convenience" type of plots, but for some reason, this book stood out to me. This is the story of Claire, who was young, smart and beautiful, yet she carried a huge burden in her life by being responsible for her mother's medical needs. Claire was a lovely character and as a reader, I couldn't help but sympathize with her. root for her and want her to get everything she wanted.

Nick was a 42 year old single man, president of his own multimillion dollar company. He is extremely smart, sucessful professional and business savy yet his personal life was not so much. His childhood had been a difficult one as he lost his parent. He was an emptionally reserved individual. His view on marriage was stilted based on a previous divorce, therefore he determined that the next time he would marry, he would approach it as he did business: with an outlined contract, a clear mind, and a woman he could control who would give him the children he desired. When he saw Claire for the first time in his company, he took special interest in her. After studying her, he determines she is the perfect candidate for his proposal. Nick is a bit of an enigma, he portrays one thing, yet his actions show a different side of him. I had a crush on him! :)

They go through with the marriage and begin to live their lives as husband and wife. I loved how their honeymoon was in my hometown of SF and I could totally see them here doing all the things they did.

4.0 out of 5 stars An easy read March 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story of Nick and Claire, "For services rendered" is about a marriage of convenience that was not so convenient after all. An easy read with lovable characters, Nick and Claire tug at your heartstrings but never really pulls you in.

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS***
The author fleshed out the characters nicely and thank goodness, she stayed within the era when the book was originally written and thus though it was reissued in 2012, the atmosphere remained intact.

Though I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I also felt as if the drama was in a plateau. There was never a climax even when Nick and Claire were fighting. There were so many instances that could have been really dramatic like their wedding and their honeymoon. But everything was so restrained.

I wanted to catch my breath, I wanted to cry, I wanted to be angry, and I was building on it, but the author never gave me the release. So in the end I felt cheated so I took off one star though I enjoyed reading the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars cute but unoriginal June 12, 2013

I feel like I've read pretty much the same storyline before and although it didn't fully prevent me from enjoying the book, I'm certainly not going to be reading it again.

A poignant love story about a woman alone in the world looking for unconditional love and a man looking for someone who wants him for more than what his money can buy them. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great October 6, 2012
By Sarah
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The characters were mildly developed, the romance was contrived, the bedroom scenes were not inspiring, and there was a distinct lack of emotion. Obviously I was not a fan. You'd be better off reading a Palmer or older Howard novel for a similar but more gripping story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended! May 26, 2013

Nick grew up doubting if anybody has ever loved him. Not even his first wife was able to show and give him the love that he used to seek from people he cared. Aside from his sister, he has not experienced being loved by anybody else. Got tossed from one foster home to the next, he tried hard to be loved by people who are supposed to take care of him. But he came to a conclusion that those people only took him for the monetary benefit it would give them. With this in mind, I felt, his main reason for ever thinking that everything can be bought, even the family that he so craved for.

Claire grew up an only child but never in one day experience loneliness or neglect by her parents. She grew up loved by both parents and seeing personally how her parents loved each other as well. Tragedy has made her see the very importance of love in the family, as her mother suffered too much from the loss of her father and how it made Clare become stronger for her mother. She struggled to give back the love to her mother even if she knows sometimes that it is futile. However, she did not lose hope that one day her mother will come back to her the way she used to be.

Nick's stubbornness almost lost him the chance to find the family and love he longed so much. Good thing that Claire has more sense to not let new love/ life come too soon. On a timely manner Nick came to his senses to save everything.

Some points I didn't like though is the concept of 'Bridgette' as someone who dreamt of Nick and Claire as her parents. The author should've used a younger 'Bridgette'. It got me thinking differently on Nick's intentions when he got mad when Claire took her. The explanation at the end on why didn't get that much merit and sounded so shallow.

This storyline has been used many times. However, I found that I was still interested during the story. Great story as long as you're not expecting a lot of suspense or tears.
