Book Description

August 26, 2010 8 and up
In 1776, 56 men signed their names on a document that they knew might well mean their certain deaths as traitors to England. Standing on principles of faith and liberty, these men forged a powerful call for freedom and human dignity still resonating today in America. Yet, historical revisionists have distorted or attempted to wipe away every trace of this nation's Christian heritage, including the heartfelt faith of these founding fathers. More than simply facts and figures, For You They Signed provides an abundance of resources within one volume, including: A full year of life-changing, challenging family or group devotional character studies, over 90 illustrations, biographical summaries, insightful quotes, and character quality definitions, Patrick Henry's speech delivered to the signers, the Christian nature of state constitutions, and the Christian nature of America's universities. The Declaration of Independence remains one of history's most enduring achievements, and this text will help you value those freedoms these men fought for in an insightfully fresh way. It will also assist you in catching the God-given vision of these faithful new Americans, igniting a fire for your family, community, and the generations to come. Here is a volume that should be found in every private and public library in America... a meticulously documented look back to the true birth of our nation. They pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor so that we could be free!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource! November 5, 2010
By Karen
Format:Hardcover
Of all the eras of history, the early American period is my absolute favorite. So, it was with great anticipation that I awaited the arrival of Marilyn Boyer's new book For You They Signed.

I can honestly say that it was well worth the wait! My first thought, upon the book's arrival, was that this beautiful, hard backed book would be well suited to a place on my coffee table. Of course, it is so much more than a conversation piece. From cover to cover, it is packed full of useful and intriguing information as well as lovely artwork.

With the turn of every page, Mrs. Boyer gives a glimpse into the character and the lives of the men who helped shape our nation - the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

For You They Signed is set up so that it can be used in a variety of settings. From personal reading, family devotions, small group study or homeschooling, the possibilities are endless. Purchasers of this book are also given the opportunity to download a companion guide free of charge! As a home school mom, this book has been a welcomed addition to our history curriculum.

The study of each signer is concise enough so as not to be overwhelming, yet packed full of information that will keep the readers interest. In it, you'll discover the answers to such things as:

* Which signer had his house burned due to his support for the Patriots?
* Who instigated the Boston Tea Party?
* Which man secretly imported weapons for the army largely out of his own resources?
* Who was the first signer to die?

And so much more!

I applaud Mrs. Boyer's efforts in writing this book and her hard work has certainly paid off. The end result? A resource that any person with an interest in history and our godly heritage should not be without.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read-Aloud Book November 9, 2010
Format:Hardcover
For You They Signed combines history and character-building into one convenient resource. The author presents biographical summaries of 56 brave men who signed the Declaration of Independence. This book helps readers see the character and Christian faith of these men who risked so much in order that we could enjoy freedom. Their firm faith, courage, and sacrifice are truly inspirational. I love what William Ellery of Rhode Island said: "I was determined to see how they all looked as they signed what might be their death warrants. I placed myself beside the secretary, Charles Thompson, and eyed each closely as he affixed his name to the document. Undaunted resolution was displayed on every countenance." (page 57) Undaunted resolution! Undaunted = not discouraged or disheartened, fearless! It was a matter of life and death; yet they were undaunted because (I believe) they placed their lives in God's hands as they sought freedom.

It's suggested that this book can be used as a family devotional, a complete resource for a single mom to teach her children Bible, character, & history, a self-study for students to work through on their own, a group study/a unit study, or an inspirational general reading for junior high age through adults. I use it as our read-aloud book in our homeschool. I have been reading it to my three children (9, 12, 17). This thick hardcover book looked somewhat intimidating to my kids :). They feel that lots of sentences (from many quotes) are long-winded (probably due to the style of writing back then :)). However, lively discussions take place during and after reading about each signer. Many interesting tidbits stand out. My 17 yo daughter noted, "I like Matthew Thornton's work ethic since I can identify with him. Once he didn't change his clothes for ten days while working on starting the New Hampshire government. To me, this shows dedication. As a result, New Hampshire was the first of the 13 colonies to create their own government apart from Great Britain." When you purchase this book, you will find a code in the book for a free download of a Family Activity Guide online. The activity guide includes coloring pages, weekly character qualities with verses for memorization, and fun quizzes. I ask my kids questions and reward them with chocolate for correct answers. That helps motivate them to pay closer attention while I read :).

If you love history (which is really His story), you will enjoy this book. If you like character-building material for your kids, you will appreciate this book. If you want accurate, thoroughly-researched American history and a faith-exemplifying & character-building resource, you will treasure this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids and I are going to have a wonderful year September 30, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I thought this was a book that I would sit down and read myself. You know, over a couple of weeks. I was clearly quite wrong. So, I settled in to read the introduction and forward and to rethink how I would use this.

That led to my discovery that Boyer has created an Activity Book to go along with the book (a free download), and that convinced me that I can actually use this title with my kids.

I read through a few of the bios on the signers myself, before trying to use the book with my kids. It is pretty easy to get sucked into just reading. Fascinating people, and I know NOTHING about the vast majority of them. How many signers can you name? John Hancock, of course. Benjamin Franklin. Thomas Jefferson. Benjamin Rush. And I was pretty sure that John Adams and Samuel Adams were on this list (they are). That means I knew of six. That puts me above average (according to the introduction, most people can name three or fewer), but still... that's FIFTY names I don't know.

We are going to study one person per week, which is one of their suggestions. From the Activity Book, I will print the coloring page (a portrait of the individual) for whoever wants one. The kids can color that as I read the chapter.

Each chapter is roughly 4-5 pages of text. I'll confess that even with the coloring page, it is too much for my youngest children, but good for the 9-13 year olds. At the end of each chapter are some questions. Some of these made us go back through the text to answer ("What qualities did William Ellery observe in Josiah Bartlett?" -- WHO was Ellery???), others led to interesting discussion ("Look up the definition of enthusiasm. How did this characterize Bartlett's life?").

The Activity Book also includes a page for each signer listing their name and state, a character quality and definition, and a Bible verse. For Josiah Bartlett, the character quality is enthusiasm, and the Bible verse is Colossians 3:23. We are printing these sheets out to hang up for the week, alongside the portrait coloring pages.

The Activity Book also includes 27 Family Fun Quizzes. The first one is to be completed after all the New Hampshire signers (3 of them). We'll try that, maybe turning it into some type of a Jeopardy-style game. I'm not sure we'll use this part though.

My kids and I are going to have a wonderful year
