Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews' is a rare artist who can draw both the unqualified respect of jazz legends and deliver a high-energy rock show capable of mesmerizing international rock stars and audiences alike. With such an unprecedented mix of rock, funk, jazz, hip-hop and soul, he had to create his own name to describe his signature sound: Supafunkrock! Andrews is the kind of ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to the energy of Backatown September 13, 2011
By Andy L.
Format:MP3 Music
After being blown away by Backatown, his previous album, I was a little apprehensive about whether Trombone Shorty would deliver the same energy and character, or would this album feel like 'more of the same'. So, I took the album out for a spin, literally, with an hour long bicycle ride. I did the same with Backatown, and ended that ride with more energy than I started with. For this album, I can say that my experience was just as exhilarating. This was another dynamic album that I really enjoyed.
If you want to get a good feel for the best of this album, check out these tracks: "Do To Me", "Buckjump", and "Then There Was You".

5.0 out of 5 stars Jamming! September 13, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I've been a fan of Trombone Shorty for years - and have been highly anticipating this CD's release. He has definitely raised the bar with this one. I dare you to listen to this CD without moving some part of your can't! Fantastic combination of unclassifiable jazz-funk-rock instrumentals and vocals. "Buckjump" sucks you in - and the rest will not let you go.

The instrumentation is tight. The beats are hot. Crank it's an instant party.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funky as funky can be. September 13, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This album is so funky I put in nose plugs and covered my head with a plastic bag in a room full of scented candles and the funk still flowed through. High energy, impeccable musicianship, mixed with down and dirty compositions make "For True" a real triumph to the highest degree.
Ain't it amazing what these kids can do with real musical instruments these days.

get off your butt and get this cd into your life! i'm not kidding. i am a J-A-D-E-D record store employee who has been working music retail since god was born, and it takes a freakin' lot to impress me these days...especially with so much crap being put out on the radio that sucks. i'd never even heard of this guy until today, but i put his cd in the player to see what it sounded like, and immediately i liked it. at first there were 2 or 3 tracks i didn't care for as much cuz i don't go for contemporary r'n'b vocal type stuff (i'm mostly a rocker), but after listening thru a second time, i find that even the "weak" tracks are better than the crap that's in rotation on pop/r&b radio. it's a nice mix of funk, retro-like jazzy latiny groove, totally modern hip hop, occasional rock guitar thrown in, and awesome horn blowing with the energy and heart beating excitment of a football marching band ...all this love from a girl who doesn't even LIKE horns most of the time! get this cd NOW! i've already gone online to get tix to see him play Nashville this month. Lucky me! :)

Talk about a child prodigy! It's gotta be something in the water in New Orleans. Look at the talented Marsalis Family with two generations of jazz legends. Then look at the Nevilles. Same thing. Now it's the Andrews family. There's Glen - who started the Rebirth Bass Band and Troy - yep, you know him best as "Trombone Shorty" .The guy turned 30 this year but he's been playing since he was SIX YEARS OLD!

I've loved his previous albums and got to see him at this year's Philly Folk Fest. Folk Fest? Just two weeks after he headlined the Newport JAZZ Fest? Is this guy versatile or what? Not only did he do an amazing hour - with his band - in Philly; he came back to play along with David Bromberg and his Big Band later that night. Even though there were chairs, no one sat during any of the time Shorty was on stage.

This CD shows why the guy is so popular. He is infectious and seeps of NOLa soul. As if he didn't need any more musical support, here he gets periodical help from Lenny Kravitz, Jeff Beck, two of the aforementioned Nevilles and Rebirth (with his brother Glen). Yep Kid Rock is here too, though I can't say I'm a big fan of KR.

The CD comes with a booklet of track info and some photos. No real "liner notes". But, heck - in this case you are here for the music. I've had the CD a week and it's in constant rotation. Not something you want to listen to before bedtime though. You'll be up all night with the music going through your head.

Gotta get me some of that New Orleans water they are drinking!

5.0 out of 5 stars new stuff from Trombone Shorty September 14, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I have seen Trombone Shorty, or Troy Andrews, recently playing at the NSJF 2011 with dr John and I liked the show very much... it was one big musical party.
After the show I got what I guess is his second album: "Backatown"; I will probably get this one too.
I listened to the samples and they give the same impression.
Trombone Shorty is a talented new jazz musician from New Orleans. He sings and plays the trumpet, the keyboard, the drums/percussion and of course the trombone. He also writes a lot of his own material. As a trombone player he is not a lazy player but rather high energy combustion. Dont expect Ray Anderson.
I would love it if this guy teams up with the young likes of Bilal, Charlie Hunter, the Dirty Dozen, Leon Parker &c and I am sure he will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shorty Grows Up October 23, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Call it jazz, soul, R&B, funk, well it is all that and more! A mass conglomeration of musical styles and that strong New Orleans street march backbone of a beat make for great fun and allow for repeated listening. Troy Andrews has been sitting on recording sessions of fellow New Orleaneans for years and his improvisations have always stirred me to my soul. Now I find that his own music is just as heart-rending.
