A big read!, May 10, 2006
Beautiful forty something widow, Camilla Eaton has become a workaholic following the death of her husband, to the detriment of her relationship with her 17 year old daughter, Poppy. From being the centre of her parent's world, Poppy feels ignored, overlooked and generally out of kilter with her formerly priveleged lifestyle. She meets and becomes sexually enthralled by an older man, a political dissident who is seeking to create a state of anarchy by the overthrowing of the government, the royal family and the upper classes in general, and virtually becomes his sex slave, living in poverty and filth. He persuades her to steal as much as she can of her mother's posssessions which can be easily sold and generally brainwashes her into total submission. At the same time, Camilla is warned by her father that strange and dangerous happenings are taking place in the small Scottish village where he has retired with his new wife. Although warned by a cryptic, anonymous letter to stay away, Camilla drives to the village with Philip, the twenty three year old son of her oldest girl friend, as company, when her father dies in a car crash. They find the house deserted and Camilla's stepmother supposedly gone abroad, so stay on in the house to try to unravel the mysteries. Soon Philip falls madly in love with the older, more sophisticated woman and a red hot affair begins. I suppose that this would be classed as a big, super soapie, but it was a great read which I loved.
