Mr. Chambers does a masterful job in this novel of suspense and mystery. I particularly like the way he introduces the characters and goes from scene to scene to build suspense and intrigue. I loved the prominence he gives to quality character and respectful attitudes, which our society seems to give so little value to these days. "Poor choices lead to bad consequences" seems to be the theme in this book -- and we all could learn from that truth. I immediately bonded with Bo and Ryan, the 8 and 10 year-old brothers who are the main characters in the story. The love and respect they show toward one another, their parents, and their grandfather was admirable. And the plot had so many twists and turns that each page kept me guessing what might happen next. History buffs will also be intrigued, as well as those who love caving. Additionally, it would be an easy read for anyone with a 6th-grade education -- but as an adult, I found it not at all "childish" in any way. And if you love a book that leaves you feeling better having read it, this one is for you. I simply found it impossible to put down. This book was truly a lot of fun to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars For community library fiction collections and anyone looking for a good adventure novel., May 6, 2008
This review is from: Forbidden Fortune: The Legend of the Frenchman's Gold (Hardcover)
Louis Mattour, Frenchman and quartermaster for the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition across the wilderness of the Louisiana Purchase in early nineteenth century, traded with Indians for gold, then hid in it in a cave before vanishing without a trace - or so the legend goes. "Forbidden Fortune: The Legend of the Frenchman's Gold" is the story of how several people, a century and a half after, pursue the mysterious Frenchman's loot, even after people mysteriously vanish searching for it. It's the 1980s, and one stranger rolling into town believes he has the secret for finding the treasure of Mattour - can he find it, or does he wind up like the many who failed before him? "Forbidden Fortune: The Legend of the Frenchman's Gold" is a deftly written adventure story not much like any other - highly recommended for community library fiction collections and anyone looking for a good adventure novel.

This review is from: Forbidden Fortune: The Legend of the Frenchman's Gold (Hardcover)
I bought this book because it was written by a friend of mine from high school (a very long time ago!). Much to my surprise, the story quickly drew me inside its forever unfolding plot. It is very intriguing and leaves room for the readers own sense of imagination. Perhaps an added bonus, whether realized or not by a young reader, would spark an interest to learn more about Lewis and Clark and their role in history of American adventure. I particularly liked the relationship Bo and Ryan had with their grandfather. It reminds us that every relationship with family and friends need to be nurtured and cherished. Way to go Danny! VERY nicely done!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Children and Adults Alike!, December 27, 2008
This review is from: Forbidden Fortune: The Legend of the Frenchman's Gold (Hardcover)
A very enjoyable read that was difficult to put down. I highly recommend for children because they will relate well to the trials these boys endured and hopefully learn how peer pressure can lead to the most tragic of consequences. Adults will enjoy the book because it will reawaken the child in all of us while simultaneously sharing the grief and joy of the parents involved.

This review is from: Forbidden Fortune: The Legend of the Frenchman's Gold (Hardcover)
Forbidden Fortune was the June selection for our local book club. It's geared towards young adults, but we (as 30-somethings) all really enjoyed it! Great story and well-written...kind of reminded me of the Hardy Boys series.

Forbidden Fortune is a gripping story that will draw you in and encapsulate your attention, while bringing back the excitement of childhood adventures and imagination. Cleverly written to keep the reader from ever putting it down, Forbidden Fortune will be enjoyed and cherished by readers, both young and old. Highly recommended for a "family read" around the fireplace, the audience will not want the story to end.
