This review is from: Forbidden Fruit: Counterfactuals and International Relations (Paperback)
Forbidden Fruit: Counter-factuals and International Relations by Richard Ned Lebow is a thought provoking book on using counter-factual `thought-experiments" to gain insight into history. Lebow makes a strong case that historians can use counter-factuals to aid in their understanding of past events. He also provides some rule or protocols to guide their usage. Lastly he examines and contrasts the usage of similar counter-factual (A fascist take-over in pre-WWII America) in a couple of works of fiction; Roth's Plot Against America and Lewis' It Can't Happen Here. I was very impressed by Lebow's presentation and think he is more or less on track with both his faith in counter-factuals as a tool and his proposed rules for their usage. I recommend the book very highly, especially for history buffs who are interested in counter-factual arguments.
