Editorial Reviews

Review

A beautiful, powerful story filled with raw emotion and intensity that touches the reader on many levels. This tale is at once a romance, but it is also about confronting prejudice and being true to oneself. The lyrical prose and complex characters captivate like a soft perfume and entice the reader on to each new page. A compelling novel not to be missed. -- Rendezvous, August 1998

FORBIDDEN QUEST is a must-read romance, especially if you believe love is color- blind (or would like to). Carolyna Sinclair is from an old, established Southern family with old money and old prejudices. She has been raised with all the ingrained beliefs of her station in life and believes they are true until she meets Paul Michael Quest, a handsome man from Jamaica. They belong to different races, different cultures, [and] have different values . . . Not a run-of- the-mill romance, FORBIDDEN QUEST approaches the differences head-on, examines them, and goes on. It is sensual, sizzling, thoughtful, thought-provoking, and above all else, a keeper. -- Under the Covers Book Reviews, June 25, 1998

In FORBIDDEN QUEST, Tomlinson offers an unusual and insightful story about a cross-cultural relationship. -- Rocky Mountain News, August 9, 1998

This novel is a must-read. [Tomlinson] takes readers on a journey inside the hearts and minds of Carolyna Sinclair and Paul Michael Quest, confronting the racism that is still rampant in many parts of the world. FORBIDDEN QUEST is a well-written, thought-provoking masterpiece. Congratulations to Ms. Tomlinson on a wonderful depiction of interracial love. -- Romantic Times Magazine, September 1998

What an amazing treat this book is! If you're like me, you've been tempted to pick up a 'multicultural' romance novel, but perhaps have shied away, not knowing what to expect. We don't want to buy a book that turns out to be cliched, insensitive, or clumsy. But we live in America in the 1990s, and it's a little strange (to me, at least) to see so many contemporary romances out there that don't address the issue of race and culture. It's reality, and when sensitively done, it can add wonder detail to a story. All this to say, FORBIDDEN QUEST is a great book . . . it is not a 'fluff' book. It is not a lightweight read with a few 'exotic' characters thrown in for good measure. The multicultural aspect is integral to the story, and the backdrop of modern-day Savannah, Georgia, is described with beautiful detail. Take the plunge into the multicultural world with this book you won't regret it. -- CompuServe Romance Reviews, August 1998

From the Back Cover

Carolyna (Cally) Sinclair is a woman with a quest. After a disastrous first marriage, the genteel-familied Southerner has at last set her life on a constructive course. Cultivating her interior design business in Savannah's historical district is high on her priority list. So is her impending marriage to Hugh Masters, the ambitious architect who pledges the stability she seeks. But Cally learns her controlling fianc has motives of his own for marrying her, motives that have nothing to do with love.

Then one day Cally meets caramel-skinned Jamaican Paul Michael Quest on the Savannah docks. Everything in her privileged, Southern upbringing tells her to ignore her attraction to the immigrant musician and artist. But Paul Michael's lyrical voice enchants her. His accepting manner and gentle touch destroy all the barriers she's been taught to maintain between her and those of his color.

With his broad shoulders and artistic eye, Paul Michael is the complement Cally needs for her business. Working side-by-side in the sultry heat of Savannah's days and nights, she and Paul Michael ignore the warnings of her judgmental family, of those on his side of town.

Soon all Cally has held dear is at risk. Will she choose her family over Paul Michael, or forever regret abandoning her . . . forbidden quest?

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, passionate, sensitive love story., February 21, 1999
By
This review is from: Forbidden Quest (Love Spectrum Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
The entire romance industry is based upon that special emotion shared between a man and a woman. Love. With love as the guide, our favorite heroes and heroines in these popular novels are able to overcome differences in social status, differences in religion, and any number of adversities. But what if the obstacle in the way of true love is a matter of difference in race? Dar Tomlinson's new book, "Forbidden Quest," is the groundbreaking first release by Love Spectrum, a division of Genesis Press (an up-and-coming new publisher in the romance business). The love interests in the story are a Savannah-born white woman and a Jamaican black man. Setting those facts aside, this is a wonderful, passionate, sensitive love story. Considering those facts, this is a wonderful, passionate, sensitive love story. Cally Sinclair is a woman with a quest. The privileged daughter of a Georgia senator, Cally has everything she wants in the world: a thriving interior design business, nice home, a dependable (though overbearing) fiancé. Why then does she feel vaguely unhappy? It isn't until she meets and employs the mysterious caramel-skinned Paul Michael Quest that Cally begins to realize something is missing in her life. As she is inexplicably drawn to the mysterious Quest, he introduces her to laugher, music, spontaneous joy, and love. His gentle, accepting ways destroy all the barriers she has been taught to maintain between herself and those of his color. True love overcomes all bounds and prejudices. An experienced author with several other books under her belt, Dar Tomlinson felt an overwhelming need to write a love story that accurately reflects the times we live in. She's crafted a wonderful tale, which looks past race and cultural differences and concentrates on the simple, wondrous love between a man and a woman in the unforgettable "Forbidden Quest." Tomlinson's bold endeavor has paid off, as the novel has been met with rave reviews and accolades by the entire industry. Sometimes it takes one bold person to pioneer a path to new horizons. Dar Tomlinson is proving to be one such trailblazer.

This review is from: Forbidden Quest (Love Spectrum Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
In FORBIDDEN QUEST, Carolyna "Callie" Sinclair, a traditional Southern White woman, is expected to get over her divorce from a physically appealing golf pro, and to get on with a proper Southern marriage to up-and-coming architect, Hugh Masters.
Callie's controlling mother, bored with the lackluster in her own marriage, has determined that Callie will marry Hugh, have a huge wedding, and become one-half of a proper Southern power couple. Her mother is so bent on having her way, she's even threating to withhold Callie's inherited trust fund just to make sure Callie complies.
Of course, Callie wants to do the right thing, but she never measures up to Hugh"s expectations, a fact he apparently enjoys ceaselessy voicing.
Then handsome Paul Michael Quest shows up, but he's the opposite of everything that Callie has been raised to believe she needs. He's Black, poor, and foreign. To make matters even worse, he doesn't se the differences between them as being insurmountable. But there's something about him that's precious to Callie, a something that always admires and never criticizes, an ability to enjoy life, one day at a time.
FORBIDDEN QUEST is an extremely well-written book, with traditions, prejudice and doubts at the forefront. In addition to the main characters, the secondary cast is interesting. All of the locations, people and situations are believable. I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A moving and wonderful romance., November 22, 1998
This review is from: Forbidden Quest (Love Spectrum Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
All too often, a novel about interracial romance is rife with angst and soul-searching, taking the focus from the romance to the issue. FORBIDDEN QUEST flips that equasion, giving us a great romance about soul-mates who happen to be on opposite sides of class and color lines. I adored Paul Micheal, who has to be one of the most loveable men of any color to grace the pages of a romance. He is tender, intelligent, and absolutely gorgeous. Although I warmed more slowly to Cally, it is her story of growth and I grew to love her, too. The book doesn't avoid the conflicts and problems the love affair creates for both characters, but the focus is on the power of joy and love, and is a true celebration of cross-cultural discovery.
