5.0 out of 5 stars Lounge Exotica done right!
Put this CD in. Get out the Rum, fruit juices and tiki mugs. Mix up a batch of Myrtle Bank Punch. Leave your cares behind.

The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki is filled with gongs, flutes, marimbas, organs, drums, birdcalls, jungle ambience and island crooners. As if that wasn't enough, the legendary Martin Denny even sits in on a few tracks.

If you need a soundtrack...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not up to par with the old masters
I bought this album on the strength of the reviews here and brief samples available for download. I love Exotica music, but once you've got some Denny, Lyman, and Baxter, it's tough to find anything contemporary that comes close. Well, this does come close, but it's just not quite there. There are a couple things in particular that got in the way of my enjoying this...

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Exotica For Pure Listening Pleasure, November 1, 2000

If you're an exotica fan and like the music of Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Arthur Lyman, Robert Drasnin, Eden Ahbez, or Hawaiian music you'll love this CD! Recorded and produced in Honolulu by Taboo Records this CD is a must have. Buy it - I guarantee you won't be disappointed! Martin Denny even makes a guest appearance on 2 of the tracks and his wonderful piano solo on "Forever and Ever" is alone worth the price of admission. This CD has it all - bird calls, jungle sounds, sultry female vocals, congos, bongos, xylophones, vibraphones, flutes and much more. Jim Howard's use of the flute, alto flute, and bass flute is particularily enjoyable and refreshing. This CD contains a pleasing mix of styles and rythyms, some are slow and soft and others have a beat that will make you want to get up and dance. This is perfect music for your next Tiki party or Hawaiian luau, or you can play it like I do to just relax and let your mind pleasantly wander. In any case, I must give this CD 5 stars. For pure listening pleasure, it just can't be beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is VERY exotic and a "must-have!", February 25, 1999

While visiting Hawaii on vacation, I took a gamble on the hip tiki-style cover and soon realized that I had found a gem among the fodder. These sultry and exotic beats will transport you to that tiki-torched lounge by the lagoon, while sipping your Mai-Tai. This is it!

5.0 out of 5 stars CMJNew Music Report "must hear" essential release 7/6/98, July 21, 1998
By A Customer

Listeners will have to go back decades to classic Hawaiian exotica such as Arthur Lyman's Taboo or Martin Denny's Forbidden Island to savor something as sensuous and tropical as The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki. The cast of nine (which includes a guest appearance by 87-year-old Martin Denny) follows the exotica revival of the mid-'90s with a mix of new sounds that instantly transports listeners to the famed Bora Bora Lounge in Waikiki; its Pulsating Polynesian Polyrhythms and romantic, torch-lit locales are pure paradise to the ears... each cut on this gem is as pleasurable and intoxicating as the next, so grab a Mai Tai, pull up a chaise lounge and bask in the warm glow. --Glen Sansone/CMJ

5.0 out of 5 stars the real deal, February 20, 2003

ive been a fan of denny and baxter for years, and thought i would never see the day when a combo would capture the vibe of these archtypes. So i put off buying this record with the fear of being let down, what a mistake!!! this record is brilliant!!!
all the elements are there including the production, and it can be safely said that don tiki is of the caliber of his influences.
if a hammock in the sun or the smell of the sea are your ideas of pleasure, this record will transport you where you want to go.

I just recently began to listen to lounge and exotica music. I've primarily been collecting the works of Les Baxter and Martin Denny. When I found out that Martin Denny was on this CD playing the Les Baxter tune "Quiet Village" I figured I'd give it a shot. Boy am I glad I did. This CD has quite a few gems on it. The music is definitely Exotica, but has a modern twist. Very good vocal work, and beautiful percussion arrangements make this CD a must have for any collector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Driving Music, July 15, 2009

I saw them play at the Hawai'ian International Jazz Festival, and immediately bought the CD after the concert.... played it in the rental cars driving all over the Islands... Drove down Chain of Craters Road to it, drove around rainforests, around O'ahu, to the piers on Maui to get to a snorkeling expedition.... perfect. Now I play it whenever I have a long drive... I hate to drive, and long drives are a real drain.... not with this in the CD player. Had a friend in the car with me recently... and she fell in love with the CD too... and is likely ordering a copy for herself soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forbidden favorites!, December 28, 2008

Don Tiki is almost too good to be true! It's neo-exotica done by hip cats in Honolulu... enough said! Buy it and raise your cool level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure lounge, December 17, 2002

How i love this album! Listening to it is like sliding into a luscious dream where beautifull people sip martini's by the pool, skies are blue and all worries seem distant. It has this great cinematic feel to it, taking you back to the late
fifties/early sixties. It reminded me allot of the early Bond movies. Apart from the beautifull atmosphere this music airs, it's also brilliantly composed and produced.
My advise: Book your flight to Don Tiki island now!
