> MAIN ENTRY: force ma·jeure
> FUNCTION: noun

1: superior or irresistible force 2: an event or effect that cannot be reasonably anticipated or controlled

Twenty-year-old genius Shane Monroe has his life laid out before him. As part of an accelerated program, he is working on a major research project for a brain trust studying weather patterns. Shane's job is to replicate a tornado through artificial means. When he manages to do just that, however, the course of his life is forever altered. His superiors want to know if he can do it "bigger -- big enough to drop on an enemy village and call it an act of God."

Shane knows what he has to do. He shuts down his storm, switches majors, and leaves the lab behind.

He is midway through his next semester when he reads of a rash of natural disasters in South America. There is no doubt in his mind: This is his fault. His notes have been confiscated and his work replicated. Now Shane is on the run, from the government, friends, and even once-trusted mentors. What began as a reputable weather study has, with the force of a tornado, taken on an unstoppable life of its own...

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-Shane Monroe, a young physics genius with a strong moral code, finds himself caught between a covert government agency dubbed the Black Box Department (BBD) and the Truth Seekers, a privately funded organization dedicated to undermining government projects that they deem immoral and dangerous. The 20-year-old's unintentional involvement begins when he harnesses the power to create tornadoes and he learns that the government wants to use his discovery to create weapons of mass destruction. When he refuses to cooperate, BBD agents capture him and murder his best friends. Several rescue scenes later, Shane falls into the hands of the Truth Seekers and learns that his dead father also refused to work with the BBD. He earns the trust of the Truth Seekers and unleashes an artificially created tornado inside his enemy's headquarters. Other than Shane, the characters are flat and static. The Truth Seekers are ostensibly the good guys, but they appear and disappear so quickly that it's difficult to root for them. The involved plot is melodramatic at times, violent scenes abound, and the body count is high. Still, older science-fiction fans will enjoy reading about bizarre government projects as well as the technology and physics used to control the weather artificially.
