This is the first in the fictional series The Dogs of War, by Leo Kessler. The SS Assault Regiment Wotan was training and recuperating after its gruelling struggle in Russia and they were glad to be out of the fray for a bit, but it would not be for long for what none of those men, straining up the grassy slope under the eyes of their commander, Colonel Horst Geier, knew was that already they had been singled out for a new mission. The German High Command knew that the British would launch an attack on Dieppe and the crucial element was time. There was only one regiment that could be trusted to get there fast enough to defend the vital coastal battery: the Soldiers of Wotan were on the move again.

If you enjoy a book that revolves around denigrating soldiers then buy this book. The author seems to have a thing for using expletives and describing sick, yet totally unrealistic situations. This book is sooooo bad, that after the first two chapters I not only stopped reading it, but threw it in the garbage where it belongs. If you want good novels about the era about the German army, then read the books written by Willy Heinrich (Crack of Doom, Cross Of Iron) or Sven Hassel (Comrades of War, Legion of the Damned, Wheels of Terror).

If you're looking for the 'Hollywood Nazis' then you'll want to pass this one up. If you want a story with more meat, and more realism, then I suggest this book- as the characters are real people with different emotions and goals with WWII as the background.

Think Gaunt's Ghosts, except in WWII.
