5.0 out of 5 stars This isn't Nancy Drew!
This isn't Nancy Drew, and thank God for that! It's about time someone wrote an exciting action/mystery with strong female characters, and Trish Kocialski has done just that. The character development is solid. These are interesting and competant female agents involved in an exciting tangle of politics, secrecy, love, and danger of global proportions. There is enough...

2.0 out of 5 stars Forces of Evil
This was the first book I read by the author. The plot was okay. The romance of the two characters was not described in depth nor was the relationship. There was no love scenes to describe the warmth of the relationship between the two main characters. We know there was a relationship between the two because the author wrote of one but nothing described their love or...

5.0 out of 5 stars This isn't Nancy Drew!, April 23, 2001

This isn't Nancy Drew, and thank God for that! It's about time someone wrote an exciting action/mystery with strong female characters, and Trish Kocialski has done just that. The character development is solid. These are interesting and competant female agents involved in an exciting tangle of politics, secrecy, love, and danger of global proportions. There is enough detail to make the setting (Catskill Mountains in New York) and the personal lives of these two women very real and engaging. The storyline is completely plausible, and the unraveling of the layers of the mystery held my attention and kept me reading late into the night. The ending is very satisfying. I want to see more books with these two agents.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, needs improved writing, February 17, 2002

This is a good book with a solid story and exciting conclusion. The only thing that keeps it from being a 5 is the writer's style. Kocialski tends to use simplistic dialogue and is repetitive in her words. How many times does she have to remind us that her characters have emerald green and sapphire blue eyes? Apparently she doesn't know how to write a love scene either, instead settling for flowery references about soaring passion and sighs of ecstasy, but not allowing any of that heat to show between her characters. The writing flaws are minor distractions however in what is overall a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystery, Mayhem, and Murder, January 8, 2008

This delightful first novel is a wonderful additon to any lesbian library. You will quickly come to care for the characters of "Dean" Peterson and Katie O'Malley as they struggle through a mystery so deep they don't even know where it will lead. I can hardly wait to read the other books in this series!

This was the first book I read by the author. The plot was okay. The romance of the two characters was not described in depth nor was the relationship. There was no love scenes to describe the warmth of the relationship between the two main characters. We know there was a relationship between the two because the author wrote of one but nothing described their love or how they displayed it other than some kissing and hugging. I was disappointed in that aspect. I could not get into the characters or how deep their feelings were. Wasn't a very good lesbian romance.

Katie is a part-time waitress and a part-time realtor. Dean has just arrived in town to take over the ROTC program at the local college.

They meet at Burp & Freddie's the local eatery where Katie is starting to get manhandled by a bunch of redneck hunters. Katie might be able to handle them, but Dean steps in to give a little help and chases to guys off without paying their bill or tipping.

They both go away from their first meeting being interested and attracted to each other.

Their attraction grows and finally they meeting on a dark hillside overlooking a resort lodging. Dean grabs Katie from behind and Katie decks her to the ground. So then we get to meet the real Katie working for the DEA and Dean working for the NSA on the gig.

They establish join surveillance with the help of the Park Ranger's office who has one of Dean's old military friends in charge. Tracy gets them set up in a back room in her office so they can watch without being on the hillside. Tracy's partner, Colleen rounds out the foursome.

The attraction grows and they become partnered, not only on the job, but for life. Dean goes berserk when Katie is found out and captured by enemy. Katie's injured and can't remember Dean at all.

During Katie's recuperation from her injuries, she begins falling in love all over again with Dean. But they still have found out what the mission of the group of underworld crime groups is up to.

This is action packed and intriguing. Couldn't put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Uber..., March 6, 2006

Kocialski presents in this first book in a currently four-book series two women who are the epitome of lesbian icons Xena and Gabrielle. Lieutenant Colonel Deanna Peterson (Xena) is working undercover when she meets DEA agent Katherine O'Malley (Gabby) who is working undercover on the same case. They work together to unravel the mystery of a drug lord and his plans to introduce a brand new, mind-controlling drug to millions of people around the world.

The characters are likable and three-dimensional. The plot, although not 5 stars, is enjoyable and demonstrates the author's imaginative talents. The author's words tend to be a little shallow at times (i.e., sharing every word of a conversation instead of relaying body language clues AND having the character think something then say it in the next sentence). However, I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a good action-packed mystery and strong female characters.
