About the Author

David L. Lewis became interested in Ford history when he became part of the Ford Motor Company's News Dept. in 1952. He was assigned to write feature stories for the company's 50th anniversary celebration in 1953, and spent months in the ford Archives. He left Ford in 1955 to complete work on his Ph.D. in history at the University of Michigan, and his dissertation was on Henry Ford. He earned his doctorate in 1959. From 1959 to 1965, he worked at General Motors, writing executive speeches and Congressional testimony, and serving as secretary of the public relations committe. Lewis joined the faculty at the University of Michigan's Graduate School of Business Administration as a professor of business history in 1965, and has been there since. He has also authored several other books on Ford and automotive history, including "The Public Image of Henry Ford" and "The Automobile and American Culture".
