This manual is vague and incomplete.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ford Mustang V8, 1964-73 (Haynes Manuals) (Paperback)
I suppose this book is fine for those people who aren't going to attempt to do more than change the oil or maybe replace the brake shoes. I've found that anything more than that is either skipped over or mentioned only in passing. For example, the section on installing the intake manifold consists only of a picture of the manifold. The fault diagnosis sections aren't terribly helpful either. A few possibilities per symptom are listed, but they are very vague, for example, "mechanical damage." Occasionally you will find a helpful bit of information, but for the most part this book is a waste of money.

Wait, this is an overhaul manual?,

This is an overhaul manual? I could have sworn it read like the Sunday comics with its pictures and captions. There is hardly enough beef in this book to help anyone rebuild an engine. Maybe if you had a NASCAR crew chief with 30 years of experience on your side you'd be able to rebuild an engine with this guide, but otherwise it's useless. At least I borrowed the book from a library and didn't waste my money. There's not enough detail, not enough clarity, and the instructions are vague. It spends like the first 5 chapters discussing how to use a micrometer and know how to build your own workbench. If I wanted to build a garage - I'll get my dad to help or a Bob Vila book, thank you very much.

Not for a Novice,
This review is from: Ford Mustang V8, 1964-73 (Haynes Manuals) (Paperback)
I am rebuilding a 1966 Mustang with no prior experience. This book did not even get me to the point that I was able to identify the parts of my carburetor and determine what steps I need to take to replace it. This book is for someone with great mechanical knowledge...to the point that they would not need this manual anyway.

Most Complete *General* Maintenance & Repair Manual,
By J. R. Sparrowhawk (Banana Republic of Floridia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ford Mustang V8, 1964-73 (Haynes Manuals) (Paperback)
I'm perplexed. I don't know what some of the highly-negative reviewers expected, or how much hands-on auto repair experience they have, but the Hayes Mustang Repair Manual has been the best *general* How-to-do-it, step-by-step manual for these cars since it was first published back in the early 1970's. It has stayed in print since then because hundreds of thousands of Mustang owners have found it invaluable. Sure, the engine-rebuilding section is slim -- it's for people who already know how to rebuild an engine. If you don't know how to rebuild an engine then you really need a task-specific manual devoted to rebuilding the particular engine you're working on -- don't expect a general whole-car tune-up and repair manual like this to give you more than an overview of something so complex as an engine rebuild. I don't know why the person who couldn't identify his carburetor parts with this book had a problem -- there are full page diagrams of how each part of the several different factory carbs go together in here -- maybe he had an after-market carb, which wouldn't be covered since the Hayes manual covers the cars as they came from the factory.
I've owned 6 Mustangs from the 1960's over the past 40 years and this book has been all I've needed to keep them on the road. I actually have two copies, one in the trunk and one in the house. This manual is the best place for anyone working on an old Mustang to start. If it turns out it doesn't quite give you all you need for what you're doing, then you can go looking for a task-specific manual or ask around on the internet forums. But I always check my Hayes manual first and rarely have to look elsewhere for my answers.

Useless,

Don't waste your time or money with this book. There is barely any actual information in this book on the Mustang. It's mostly contains all the other generic information found in the other manuals. Save yourself some frustration and order the Ford factory service manual and the Osborne assembly diagrams instead from a vintage Mustang parts supplier.

Book is good, lots of details.
Just a pitty that the title is not realy clear about the content. 80% is about the engine.20% about the rest of the car. Meaning, If you own an I6 (200), book is not realy yours.

This book has great illustrations and references. Don't expect to buy any book and instantly be able to fix your car without any mechanical knowledge. I have a degree in mechanics and I found this book to be very helpful while rebuilding my classis mustang. The wiring schematics could be much better, but those can be found online. Torque specs/sequences and general specs are listed and easy to find. Overall a great book.

just bought this book at autozone. i make it a habit to buys these books as soon as i get a new vehichle. the ones (chilton & haynes) ive had in the past for my s-10s, were pretty decent. flipping thru this its apparent nobody has updated the pictures (all 3 of em) in 40 yrs. it reminds me of the vague books n movies we had to look at in shop class, from the 1950s. small, black & white pictures of the general area of work, not the part itself, & surely not the step by step removal. i plan on getting the chilton as well, hopefully itll be better. save your money!
