A Decent Book, With Some Limitations,
By Sandy McLendon (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ford-Taurus/Sable 1996-99 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manuals) (Paperback)
Chilton books have been part of my automotive coping strategy for years- one of their publications once even helped me find out where a bad repair from my mechanic went off track, and I was able to give the mechanic enough info to get the repair re-done correctly. This book seems to be okay, with one exception that is usual to Chilton guides. There is not NEARLY enough information on dismantling soft trim and dash components, and what there is does not cover the different configurations you're likely to find. For instance, this guide shows how the centre console goes together- but only the extra-cost version with the stick shift in it. The standard console- found in most Tauruses- is not shown at all. Since many owners confine their do-it-yourself efforts to fixing soft trim glitches and replacing light bulbs, this is a considerable lack in Chilton's efforts. Recommended, nontheless- there's very good info on what's under the hood, and it's very specific concerning what CAN be repaired and what is factory-set, and therefore not to be messed with. That's invaluable info on today's highly computerised cars.

I am always pleasantly surprised when I order used books and they arrive in great condition. And best of all my husband is happy with it. That's what counts, right?

I bought this repair manual when I bought a used 1999 Ford Taurus. Needless to say, I've had to make some repairs over the past few years. This book has been extremely helpful, with step-by-step directions that are usually quite clear. If the writing somehow confuses me, I'm usually able to understand it by looking at the pictures which are placed on almost every single page. Definitely a great resource if you are planning on making repairs on your own car, from very basic things to much more complex repairs, the Chilton repair manual will guide you through the entire process. I would definitely recommend not only this particular book, but Chilton in general, as a fantastic guide to car repair.

Hi,
I went to my local Aid Auto store to Pickup supplies for my newly acquired Taurus last March, and I ended up buying a Haynes repair manual, because they didn't have the Chilton version. I've had numerous vehicles in my life, and have bought a Haynes manual before..and it sufficed. At home, I removed the shrink wrap and ,flipped through the book, and immediately realized that I should have located a Chilton, instead. The Haynes wasn't user friendly, nor did it give enough clear info in the pictorals. After finding a deal on a new,but "yellowed" (pages) copy of Chilton for 1996 Taurus..I promptly returned the Haynes to Aid Auto. The Chilton's Manual did not disappoint. It is much clearer in its explanations(geared to the layman) and in its diagrams and photos. If ever there was a book to take on the road with you...This is It! Don't leave home without it! Mr.T

As usual Chilton has produced another manual that is useless to anyone who wants to do much more than check the tire air pressure. All repairs that require a slight bit of mechanical ability are not described and instead the reader is advised to take the car to the dealer. Don't bother buying this book. Read the owner's manual that came with the car instead.
