This is a tool that allows me to carve wood beyond the use of traditional carving chisels and gouges. Obviously, it is important to develop great carving skills thru the traditional methods. However, the Foredom rotary carving tool allows for different style of carving and creativity.
When using this tool one should allow for dust. I recommend dust collection and proper dust mask be used as the is plenty of fine dust created when working with wood. Eye protection is critically important as well.
This is a quality tool and a lot of fun to use. One can be quite creative with this tool at hand.

This is a properly designed USA made industrial quality tool. Some of the finer points include:

- Cast iron foot pedal and motor housing. Built to last and transfer heat away. Art Deco motor housing design makes me chuckle.
- Ball bearings in the motor and included hand piece. Hand piece bearings are properly pre-loaded. No burr bouncing like on a Moto-Tool with its incorrect bearing design.
- Useful torque at very low speeds. You can run it so slow that you can see it spin while it does useful work!
- Foredom intends for you to be able to service the device. Fix it if necessary. Do not throw away.
- Great assortment of accessories. This will introduce you to the better quality Foredom and 3M abrasives available.

If you have used Moto-Tool type mini die grinders you will find this tool much more useful. A recommended investment. I use mine for wood carving, metal cutting and polishing and detail work on circuit boards.

Bought this model (5400 TX) for the power of the motor and I have not been disappointed. It does not bog down when I am roughing out a shape in hardwood and the foot speed control allows me to get just the speed I want for the job. Great tool for your carving arsenal.

I was expecting to get this package later on this week but it came merely days after ordering it. I haven't yet used it but it is much more heavy duty than the one that is in the wood studio at ASU. It aslo comes with three size collets that the Dremmel accessories fit into....if you get the ez change adapter from Dremmel it fits in the collet and you can switch between the ez bit heads and not have to worry about the spanner wrench and how long that takes to loosen and tighten. I also like the durability of the foot petal versus the plastic petals that come with some of the other models. I can tell that this piece of equipment will be around my studio for a long time. I plan on using this more for metal chasing than wood carving and that is why I wanted the 1/3 hp motor. Overall I would highly recommend purchasing your Foredom through Amazon.
