Book Description

January 1999
Since its founding in 1945, the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan (FCCJ)has been a haven for working journalists. From its origins at "No. 1 Shimbun Alley" in the ruins of Tokyo immediately after World War II, the club quickly took on a life of its own. At times it became like a miniature United Nations, meeting the needs of hundreds of foreign journalists from around the world, who used it as a working press center as well as a social oasis.

Club members, who include several Pulitzer Prize winners, have personally witnessed and reported on some of the most momentous events of the last half century-the end of World War II and the occupation of Japan; the revolution in China; the Korean War; Vietnam and the student riots of the 1960s; the height of the Cold War; Japan's economic miracle and the subsequent collapse of the "bubble" economy; the death of Emperor Hirohito; and much more.

Foreign Correspondents in Japan gives an intimate and colorful look at these journalists who covered Asia for the rest of the world during five decades of sweeping change, and provides first-person accounts of history as it was being written.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Intertwined with the history witnessed and retold here by journalists are behind-the-scenes stories of what it was like to cover the history-making events in Asia over the past 50 years. Correspondents were asked to research and write about an assigned decade as if they were writing a news story. The effect, enhanced by an abundance of photographs, conveys the immediacy of the news of the decade. Contributors also provide informal accounts of the day-to-day life of reporters in Asia. The book is divided into sections: the Korean War years, the period of unrest in Asia following the war, the Vietnam era, the fall of Saigon and the cold war years, and the newest era, which has seen Japan rise to prominence in the global economy. Contributors recall the atmosphere of Asia at the time, the press restrictions, and the difficulty of penetrating a relatively closed culture. They recall the things that didn't make it into stories that were filed (suspicions during the cold war about who among them might be CIA or KGB plants) and lesser news stories (Billy Graham's evangelist crusades in Japan in the early 1950s). Contributors note the changes in the correspondents themselves, who have become a more diversified group, better versed in the language and culture of Asia. A fascinating look at history and journalism. Vanessa Bush
