This 23-chapter book is a tale of East meets West set in the wild and heady days of interwar China. It is an account of how two cultures clashed, bickering over business deals and social norms until they eventually learned to live with each other.

"In Foreign Devils in the Flowery Kingdom, originally published in 1940, Carl recalls his 25 years in China and the lessons he learnt. He was almost unique among foreign commentators in taking the time and effort to understand and appreciate the Chinese and their culture while also providing a vivid portrait of foreign life in Shanghai - a city, which Crow accurately predicted 'will only now live in memories'". --Paul French - author of Carl Crow, a Tough Old China Hand
"Carl Crow's experience offers valuable clues on how to be successful in China - and just as importantly, how to remain sane." --James McGregor - author of One Billion Customers.
He hung around in Shanghai for 25 years before being chased out by the Japanese in'37. He went back to America and played a key role in running America's wartime propaganda effort in China. Perhaps the most amazing thing about Carl was his "guanxi" -- he was friends with Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek, Madame Chiang, Zhou En-lai, a few warlords and just about every prominent foreigner on the China coast between the wars.

Great book about life in pre-war China,
This review is from: Foreign Devils in the Flowery Kingdom - with a new foreword by Paul French (Tales of Old China) (Paperback)
Another great Carl Crow book - I was already fairly familiar with his writing and life in Shanghai, but this book filled in many gaps with humor and style.
