Book Description

October 2004
FOREIGN OBJECTS is a compilation of pen-and-ink drawings from artist/writer David Reisman's dream journals. Surreal, funny, and at times unsettling, Reisman's drawings feature friends and family, acquaintances, a variety of character types, and celebrities including Bob Dylan, Woody Allen, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Jackson Pollock, and David Letterman. While FOREIGN OBJECTS is a kind of unconscious autobiography, the book may be seen as an effort, as the author's brother Carl Reisman notes in his foreword, to "help us build bridges, however rickety, between our isolated selves and humanity."

Editorial Reviews

Review

.... a surrealist masterpiece! David Reisman's dream art is autobiography at its most auto-luminescent. -- Rick Veitch, author/artist of Rabid Eye:The Dream Art of Rick Veitch

In this diary of dream moments, Reisman illustrates many hilariously absurd situations that will leave you laughing. -- Peter Kuper, Cartoonist

Ironically, I have found his book helpful in stimulating my own dream recall. I keep it on the nightstand... -- Richard Russo in Dream Time, October 2005

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dream as Still Life, December 7, 2004

This review is from: Foreign Objects: Dream Drawings (Paperback)
In David Reisman's wonderful new book, he continues a tradition of interpreting dreams but with his own original twist. For centuries ancient cultures and artists have seen the dream as a source for predicting the future or a way to unlock subconscious fears and desires. Reisman has set out to illustrate them through drawing and text with the neutral vision of a painter as he views a still life. He often uses the absurdity of odd juxtapositions that most of us witness in our own dreams. Famous people (Bob Dylan, George Bush, Jackson Pollock) play parts in the ordinary settings of Reisman's nocturnal wanderings. The dangerous situations that he dreams of are subverted by humor as a much needed escape. Maybe Reisman's dreams are not far from our own daily realities where we attempt to calm our anxieties with a healthy sense of humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book That Deserves a Fan Club, November 2, 2006
This review is from: Foreign Objects: Dream Drawings (Paperback)
I love this book! I keep it on display in my living room, so friends can discover it too. People say that nothing is as boring as another person's dreams, but David Reisman's drawings capture the flavor and content of his dreams in a way that's touching, truthful, and funny - sometimes all at once. Don't expect New Yorker-style cartoons with zippy punchlines - but do expect to smile a lot and laugh out loud.
