Editorial Reviews

Review

From the reviews:

"Drs. Shkrum and Ramsay have produced a work that should grace not only every general pathologist’s bookshelf, but that of every forensic pathologist and death investigator as well. … major work of excellent scholarship, articulate, and accessible to the non-forensic pathologist and medical examiner alike. … I will refer to this outstanding book for years to come." (Gregory J. Davis, Canadian Society of Forensic Science Journal, December, 2007)

One would expect that the illustrations in a practical manual such as this would be sharp and clear, maybe even in color. For almost $300 they bloody well ought to be in color. But they aren't. The illustrations in the book are black and white only and often very difficult to make out. But wait, not to worry, on page xiii we are told "All figures appear in both color and black and white on the companion CD". But there was no companion CD with the copy of the book my medical school library received. Upon contacting the publisher, the library was told that "sorry, we don't supply a CD any more. But you can go tom our web site and download the illustrations yourself". Yeah, great. You charge $300 for a book and are too damn cheap to 1) print the illustrations in color 2) print them in clear black and white or even 3) provide a CD yourself. No, the purchaser has to make their own CD. Which wouldn't be that much of a bother in and of itself. But regardless of whether the CD is provided or self-made who the hell wants to have to haul a computer around just to be able to see clear examples of the illustrations that any reasonable publisher would have printed in the book in the first place? As far as I'm concerned, this renders the book essentially useless. I can't recommend it to anyone. And I hope that we all boycott Humana Press until they start behaving like an honest publisher. I have asked my medical school library to halt all purchases of any Humana publications.

I love this book. It is one the more advanced books for me. It came in as agreed and on time.
