This book was an unexpected great find. I was looking for some other material on Vietnam and ran across this book. I figured, for the price I would check it out. It turned out that reading about Mike's time in Vietnam, during the war, shed insight on what was going on over there. It wasn't all about napalm! There was a lot of life going on and seeing it through his 14 year old eyes was really interesting. It looks like Mike had to grow up fast.

Once I finished the book, which was a really quick read, I found myself wanting to hear more details about life in Vietnam. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars a whole new view of Vietnam, July 26, 2011

I really enjoyed this book. A really amazing new perspective on the war.

As a Brit I had no idea that there were even US civilian dependents in Vietnam during the war. After reading the book I am even more amazed that they let them stay.

The story is really interesting and often very funny. The author runs around getting into all kinds of trouble with drugs, girls and the police and goes fishing in the middle of a Viet Cong ambush.

Well worth a read if you have any interest in Vietnam or military history, or just as an entertaining true story

The book is mostly about a 14 year old living in Saigon. It tells of his
adventures and very little about the war itself. It talks about drug use
by GI's which in most cases was not done. I would recommend it as the
story of a young boy and not much about the real war itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great adventure., May 24, 2011

Mike's book is a look back at a time when I was running around Europe to avoid the draft. Here, he is in the thick of it.
It makes me remember this senseless war and the many who died or were forever ruined by memories and or hard drugs. You all have my admeration which ever way things turned out for you.
