5.0 out of 5 stars My first Fighting Fantasy, April 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Forest of Doom (Fighting Fantasy) (Paperback)
This was the very first Fighting Fantasy game book I ever owned twenty-five years ago. I was quickly hooked, and now I'm enjoying them all over again. I really like the story and illustrations, and it isn't terribly difficult to solve. The concept of going through a book where you actually fight enemies while looking for lost items was a great idea, and it's easy to play for several hours. Drawing a map to get through the forest will help you, although there is a huge difference when playing these books in 2011....the internet. Many of these books have online finished maps and step-by step instructions to help you get through the adventure, and it's very tempting to cheat when you are having trouble advancing in the story! I also enjoyed the way the book made you feel as if you a traveling through a dangerous place, and that being risky in your game decisions are sometimes (but not always) necessary to succeed. It's also nice to be able to get these books for a great used price through Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars this book really deserves 4 stars but..., March 3, 2011

forest of doom really deserves 4 stars but i felt i needed to give it 5 in order to balance the last reviewers "1".

this was a really fun choose your own adventure style book. i love the whole fighting fantasy line. i think its really fun to have "dice" rolls and to keep track of things on your quest. for those of you who don't know, the fighting fantasy books have a crude combat system (yet still fun) and you can find keys and things along your quest that can change certain encounters.

and also, i loved the "disturbing" art, but to each his own.

: )

1.0 out of 5 stars The Illustrator for Forest of Doom was GROSS, February 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Forest of Doom (Fighting Fantasy) (Paperback)
Came in great condition, I cannot complain.

One becomes lost almost instantly in the book, and it's an ugly forest you wouldn't want to be in.

It has ugly characters and hideous pictures that gross you out. Even the "men" in it are all lumpy-skinned and sick.

Not scary, just unsettling.

The illustator for this book seemed to have a warped idea of a forest,

and even what a muscled man looks like.

Warts do not equal muscles.
