Our 16 month old loves the Pledger books. While we read, she lifts the flaps and touches the variety of rough/smooth/furry surfaces. She probably has 50 other books, but she knows what she likes and at bedtime, points to the Pledger books on the shelf and begs us to read them (in "toddler-ese"). While the book description identifies this as a book for 4-8 year olds, I think much younger kids can benefit from this series. One note: we never leave these books alone with our daughter, her enthusiasm for them has resulted in a few torn flaps and pages!

In the Forest is a good educational book for a wide age span of children. In addition to tactile stimulation, one can learn about animals, colors, numbers and counting, and seek and find. My 15-month-old daughter has been enjoying this book since age 6 months, developing from learning to touch and feel, to finding hidden creatures, and learning animal names and sounds. She now loves to lift the flaps, too. I highly recommend this book for children of any age. While the written content of the book is geared more towards a pre-school age, there are definitely things for younger children to learn and enjoy as well.

We have three of these books. The other two we have are "In the Ocean", and "In the Rain Forest". The rain forest and forest ones are her favorite and she isn't even one year old yet. I give a lot of credit to these books because they are the only things that can keep her still for a long period of time. They have been life savers on airplane rides. I believe they have also encouraged her early love of books.

The touch and feel books by Maurice Pledger are nice but we like the Peek and Find (Oliva Owl, Bobby Bear)books by the same author better. These touch and feel books have beautiful animal illustrations hidden under flaps on each page with a patch of textured material to touch. Although the books are recommended for age 3+ we started reading these with our granddaughter at 15 months and have read each book many times. You do have to be a bit gentle with the flaps, but we don't worry about a little damage. The used books that we bought from Amazon connected vendors gave excellent service and excellent condition books.

This is my very favorite childrens book. I am heartbroken that this series in now out of print. How can that be? The natural world is every child's birthright and these beautifully illustrated touch and feel books introduce the child to what treasures are out in nature for them to discover.
Cute books about little bunnies dressed up like humans are all very sweet but these books have real animals, fish, insects etc. for the child to learn about their own, real world.
I would encourage the publishers to re-print them and do a much better job of advertising them and getting the word out.
