Book Description

July 1, 1988
Forest Wildflowers, the second in a three-book series on wildflowers of the northern Rocky Mountains, is an invaluable and convenient pocket guide for hikers, travelers, and all amateur botanists, as well as teacher, range managers and other experts. The author of Forest Wildflowers groups, pictures, and describes each wildflower according to family. Technical terminology has been kept to a minimum, and line drawings, a picture glossary, and a glossary of botanical terms help identify species quickly and accurately. For any nature-lover who has asked, "What flower is that?" Forest Wildflowers holds the answer.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent resource, August 22, 2011
By
This review is from: Forest Wildflowers (Paperback)
I have used Dee Strickler's flower books for 25 years in Colorado. Even though he wrote them from a Northwest perspective, I have found his collection and photos and descriptions to be more useful than almost any other flower books. While many people depend on groupings by color, I learned to identify flowers by family type (four petals? must be a mustard), which is esp. helpful for flowers that defy color groupings.

Occasionally Dr. Strickler included one of his favorite photos which featured a non-standard version of a flower (Red Columbine comes to mind: his photo featured a rare golden variant): not the most helpful for ID purposes. And sometimes he forgot to give all-important size information (his Forget-Me-Not appears to be an inch wide). But overall, very good photos and descriptions, including interesting comments and helpful lists of alternate names.

The fact these books are still in print in testimony to their enduring value. I'm sorry Dr. Strickler left us in March 2011. If there are wildflowers in heaven (and why wouldn't there be?), he's a happy camper!
