Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Unfortunately, a really good book often brings pressure on a writer to produce another?and quickly. It's usually a formula for failure and seems to be what happened with Anderson's latest (after Simply Love). The author seems obsessed with the topic of verbal, sexual and physical abuse in her uneven tale of abuse-victim Meredith Kenyon who defies a court order and flees New York City with her four-year-old daughter, Sammy. She rents a run-down house in the wilds of Oregon, only to discover that her neighbor is the county sheriff, Heath Masters, and his retired canine cop, Goliath. The flaws begin with Goliath, who alternately terrifies and endears himself to Meredith and Sammy, and ends with Heath arresting Meredith, then tossing his career out the window (literally) to join them in their flight. With so many character flaws and unbelievable plot twists, the book feels as if it had been penned under duress.

From Library Journal

A protective, heroic Rottweiler, a fugitive mother and child, and a savvy country sheriff come together in a sensitive story of abuse, pursuit, and renewal. Anderson gives the old custody-battle plot an unusual twist as she infuses it with her compassionate, emotionally involving brand of literary magic. Heartwarming humor, beautifully handled sexual tension, and exceptionally well-developed characters add to this poignant, compelling story. Noted especially for her portrayal of wounded protagonists and their ultimate healing through the power of love, Anderson (Simply Love, LJ 5/15/97) has won a number of awards, including the prestigious Janet Dailey award for romances dealing with serious social issues. She lives in Sutherlin, Oregon.

Not only does Catherine Anderson do a great job creating wonderful characters and a very moving love story, but she also tells a great tale.

Not only does Catherine Anderson do a great job creating wonderful characters and a very moving love story, but she also tells a great tale. She has a particular talent for creating great heroes that seem like ordinary guys, but when it comes time to protect or defend their mates, they show an amazing depth of caring and commitment without turning all wishy-washy. Heath Masters is a perfect example. "Forever After" is about Meredith and her daughter, Sammy, who are in hiding from some shady characters from their past. They happen to move next to Heath, a very sexy small town sheriff, and his dog. Meredith's stringent refusal to accept his neighborly advances only whet Heath's curiosity. Little does he know that Meredith and Sammy are going to lead his life in all sorts of unexpected directions. The rest of the story is so good that I don't want to give it away, so just do yourself a favor and read this book!

First and foremost, I have never before come across a character as beautifully potrayed as Heath Masters! The guy should be brought to life... the best part about him was that he could laugh at himself and was not afraid to love.. *sigh*
O.K. second best thing about the book is the dog!! Goliath was excellent as a friend and protector and showed far more intelligence than his human counter parts.
The story was nothing unusual, single mother running from a horrible past, runs straight into the arms of a handsome hunk... what gripped me was the personality of each character, including the dog, was well written. A good mix of humour, weepy emotions and spicy sex! Truly emotionaly satisfying!

FOREVER AFTER is a wonderfully written story. The characters are so real that you are pulled into their lives as you read. Meredith and Heath are two people who eventually grow to understand each other as they finally confess their secrets; however, the brightest stars in this book are Sammy and Goliath, child and dog, but not just any dog he's a retired canine cop with numerous accomodations. The love that develops between them is truly a heavenly match. Sammy will have you laughing out loud with some of the things that she says. The life that she has suffered prior really lets you know that children can be strong individuals. I hope that a sequel may be in the works for Sammy after she grows up. This book truly is enjoyable. So relax and enjoy.

Before getting to 3 pages from the end of the book, I would have rated this book much higher. I seem to be the only reviewer that is appalled by one line spoken by the "hero" of the story. The book focuses on the struggles of a single mom, fleeing a mob-connected father-in-law. The author made the mental, physical and sexual abuse of the "heroine" a key point in the book. Good story until the end when she and the hero were reunited and he states how often he's thought of seeing her again and "raping her sweet a@@." WHAT????!@!!@@?? Are you kidding me? There is NEVER an occasion when this comment should be used as a joke or an endearment. It will be a long time, if ever, before I buy another Catherine Anderson book.

I usually don't write reviews but I had to speak my mind about how disappointed I was in this book! This was probably the worst book I've read by Catherine Anderson thus far. This book paled in comparison to Comanche Heart, My Sunshine, and Annie's Song. I'd go so far as to say that Blue Skies was better than Forever After, and Amazon readers gave that book low ratings. There was so much that bothered me about this book, that I am so surprised that it got such high ratings by readers. Come on readers, I really rely on you guys to weed out "don't-waste-my-time-or-money books". After reading the reviews, I actually went out and bought this book, thinking it would be a keeper...wrong! Went straight into my donate pile after reading.

Here are my few issues with this book:
- Didn't feel any chemistry between the H/H. None. No way was that mistaken as Love! I agreed with him when he said (to himself) that she "had a personality of a rug". She was timid and distrustful, and truly had a wooden personality, so why was he, this gorgeous man, so in love with her?! As for the hero...His personality edged near creepy and slimy at some parts in the book. "Old Glory"?! Give me a break! He kept on getting angry because of misunderstanding, where he kept on thinking violent things he wanted to do to her. What is up with that?
-I am so use to Ms Anderson's style of potraying the heartfelt feelings for the characters. The dialogue was so stilted and the overall flow was so disjointed that you didn't feel close to anyone...maybe Goliath, ok and Sammy...maybe. I didn't like any of the characters at all.
- The story itself was so farfetched that I ended up skimming just to get to the ending to see how the chaos was going to worked itself out. As I finished the book, I can hear myself thinking "yeah, right".

I can not beleive that this book was written by the same author of Annie's Song (my all time favorite!). I regretted the money and time spent on this book.

Catherine Anderson's obvious intelligence and sensitivity comes through in this tale of a desparate-but-strong mother, her precocious-but-withdrawn child, a big-hearted Rottweiler, and a strong-and-sensitive sheriff. I loved many of the scenes, especially the one of Goliath, the Rottweiler, sleeping on his back in the bathtub, and the classic scene of the daughter washing the sheriff's mouth out with soap (their agreement if he continued using cuss words). I enjoy Ms. Anderson's well-crafted writing, and love her stories. This is the first contemporary of her's I have encountered, but I hope it is not the last!
