Book Description

August 1998
Much has been written about the Oklahoma City bombing and how 168 people were killed. But news accounts often fail to put a face on the victims or to show the significance of their lives and contributions to their families and communities. Little is known about the lives of the many who survived the blast and the families of those who didn't. The tomorrows of so many ordinary people have been irreparably altered by a single act of domestic terrorism. Three years in the making, "Forever Changed" is the exclusive volume that brings together survivors and family members of victims. This powerful work tells the special stories of those who died, the pain endured by their families, and the ongoing struggles of the survivors a circle of grieving and hope that reaches far beyond the heartland. These unique first person accounts lucidly illustrate the goodness that was lost on 19 April 1995, the legacies that remain, and the courage of all those who were affected by the bombing. Internationally recognised victim's rights advocate Marsha Kight and her assistant, Lori Doggett, collected these stories and photographs from the many families in their home city and kept them in storage until the juries were chosen for the perpetrators' trials. Kight also contributes the story of her daughter, Frankie Merrell, 23, who was killed in the blast.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Marsha Kight, who lost her 23-year-old daughter in the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, has compiled scores of essays, including testimony from survivors of the bombing as well as recollections of the relatives and friends of those who perished. The stories provide a comprehensive look at how a routine day at the office turned into a living hell for hundreds, and their power derives from the mundane details and the understated manner in which people who have suffered much recall the colossal blast and its aftermath. Some survivors talk of having to attend dozens of funerals in the weeks immediately after the bombing, while others recall having to go through endless surgical procedures. Family members of those who perished recount the emotional trauma, which never seems to cease. --Robert McNamara

From Publishers Weekly

Devastating is the word for this collection of 79 articles by survivors and relatives of survivors or victims of the bomb blast that killed 168 people in the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City three years ago. Assembled by victims' rights advocate Kight, director of Families and Survivors United, who lost a daughter in the explosion, the effect is hinted at in the anguished cry of a survivor: "How can anyone ever understand what we are going through?" And indeed we cannot, but we at least get an idea of the horror not only of the moment, but of the hours, days and weeks that followed, with the protracted search for bodies through the rubble; the innumerable surgeries; the ordeal of attending four funerals a day of co-workers and friends; and, finally, the psychological aftermath for families who still have death "haunting their minds and tormenting them in the night." The only bright spots are the kindnesses of friends, neighbors and even strangers, along with the deep religious faith that sustained many of the affected. The volume succeeds heartbreakingly well in putting a human face on the many victims of this tragedy. Photos.

By A Customer
This review is from: Forever Changed: Remembering Oklahoma City, April 19, 1995 (Hardcover)
This book allows the reader to see in real life how families handled the bombing in Oklahoma City. Some stories leave you crying from sympathy, but a surprising amount of the book leaves you crying with joy. One of the stories is mine. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you everyone for reading it.
