Book Description

October 2002
This is a story about a little girl called Ruby Rose who was abandoned in the forest and left for dead. Luckily, she was found by seven fairy godsisters who took her home and nurtured her back to good health. A childless king and queen, hearing of the abandoned child, eagerly bring her to live with them. The new parents, amazed by their good fortune, are surprised to find that their beautiful princess has a rather surprising habit of stretching the truth. In fact she tells the most outrageous lies. But why?

The tale reflects the joys and pitfalls of adopting or fostering a child with a history of early trauma. It is accompanied by a parenting guide which provides practical step-by-step help in assisting families work through their child's negative behaviors to achieve more positive ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!, April 4, 2006

I have been a therapeutic foster parent for 7 years. This is one of my favorite books to share with the children who come into my home. The storyline gives children a safe way to explore all the feelings and behaviors they experience. It has also been a wonderful tool for showing the other children in the home how and why some children behave like they do. I highly recommend this book to any parent!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not so much, July 14, 2008
By
Mary Tate (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Forever Child: A Tale of Lies and Love (Paperback)
Being an adoptive parent of older children and working in the field of adoption, I found this book disturbing. The premise is good, but the story with content as "Parents who knew not how to parent brought their virtueless children to the fairy sisters to have their magic bestowed upon them. and ... recently found a tiny girl child of about five abandoned in the forest by neglected and uncaring parents." How many more ways can you tell a child they are worthless and I don't believe that is what really needs to be conveyed to a child. This is not a book I would ever recommend to anyone and I will assume the series is just the same.

If you have a child or know of a child with Reactive Attachment Disorder this is a great book. It created a wonderful talking point with my two RAD kids who identified with it far more than with other publications we have purchased in the past
