These three Return to Forever mates reunite for two discs' worth of brand-new recordings-with special guests Chaka Khan, Jean-Luc Ponty and Bill Connors! They shift from electric fusion to acoustic jazz, breathing new life into On Green Dolphin Street; Windows; Waltz for Debby; Crescent; I Loves Your Porgy; Hackensack; Se+Ýor Mouse; After the Cosmic Rain; Armando's Rhumba; No Mystery , and more.

After touring with a reconstituted Return to Forever, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White decided that they so enjoyed playing together as a rhythm section that they should tour as their own trio. At every step of the way and at every gig, they recorded the band and the result is here in the form of this great two cd set. The first cd comes from a handful of live gigs, mostly from a gig at Yoshi's in the first leg of the tour but with a track or two from other dates. The second cd (with the exception of the last track recorded live at the Monterey Jazz Festival) comes from pre-tour rehearsals recorded at Mad Hatter Studio and includes guestwork by original Return to Forever guitarist Bill Connors, Violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and vocalist Chaka Khan.

We have here a trio in fine form that feels equally at home in standards or originals. They are clearly having fun with every track and always trying to put some new spin on an old classic from the Corea songbook, such as the driving acoustic version of 'Senor Mouse' that concludes disc one. We also have the trio's take on a few standards, "Green Dolphin Street", "Waltz for Debby" and, may favorite on the album, Thelonious Monk's "Hackensack" (Chick's takes of Monk are always filled with a sense of impish glee that's a real joy). Another highlight is a new tune, Clarke's "La Cancion De Sofia", which also contains an impressive and lyrical extended bass solo from Stanley himself.

The second disc is also not without its fair share of wonders, including a great romp through original Return to Forever song "Captain Marvel", which I've always felt is criminally underplayed. We're also treated to a second version of 'Senor Mouse', this time with Chick on Rhodes and the original guitarist for Return to Forever sitting. Also Jean-Luc Ponty steps in for a song or two, including the great latin "Armando's Rhumba". The latter half of the disc is spoiled somewhat for me by the presence of Chaka Khan, a jazz vocalist I think sounds kind of tacky, but for the wealth of great music already had, I can forgive the second disc (and besides, even jazz vocals are greatly appreciated by some).

This set has some great music in it. If you're a fan of Chick, it's hard to imagine you'll be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Corea, Clarke & White Make Great Recording". June 8, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is an amazing 2 CD release by the trio of Chick Corea (17 Grammy Award winner pianist/composer), Stanley Clarke (bassist) & Lenny White (drummer) titled 'Forever'. Disc 1 (8 fairly long tracks) was recorded live during 'RTF-Unplugged' 2009 world tour (reworked music in acoustic setting), its sound so good that it could easily be mistaken for a studio recording. The result is a great jazz-rock fusion sound produced by these talented jazz masters at work. Stand-outs are "On Green Dolphin Street" (great piano), "Waltz For Debby", "Bud Powell", "La Cancio'n de Sophia" (wonderful piano, violin & melody. This is my favourite track from this CD) & "Senor Mouse". Disc 2 (10 standard length tracks) is a bonus CD. Stands-outs include "Armando's Rhumba", "Renaissance" (saxophone infused track with a great violin), "High Wire - The Aerialist" (great vocals), "I Love You Porgy" (a wonderful slow track with beautiful vocals. This my favourite from this CD) & "After The Rain". On overall, Corea, Clarke & White display great musicianship in this great release, a highly recommended 2 CD listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must hear - for everybody (not just RTF fans...) June 18, 2011

I'm not going to go into long details about every track, etc.
But this is just terrific! White supports perfectly, and Corea and Clarke are just outstanding! Beautiful playing/soloing/interpretation! I don't know when Clarke has played such beautiful solos, simply moving.
A plus - the sound quality for live is fabulous.
Then CD 2 - again, terrific! Ponty and Khan are brilliant!!

Highest recommendation for this! Wonderful jazz!

Does CC have no imagination left or why else has he to re-release the same songs over and over again? It is a swindle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice to hear to Hear Chic's Standards
It was great to hear Chic & Stanley again they had the same old zest, As for Lenny White, a bass drum sound from the 40's and as a player who plays like he's 100 years old.
