5.0 out of 5 stars My 9-year-old LOVES these
We bought these books for our son because we remembered how much we loved them at his age. They are much quicker reads than I remember, but he loves them, so they get 5 stars. One book takes him less than 45 minutes to get through. He hasn't gotten to the stage where he goes back and makes different choices yet, but I'm sure he'll become even more fond of them then.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just doesn't seem the same
I, like many other reviewers here, remember fondly reading these type of books as a child, flipping back and forth, reading all the twists to each excitingly different ending. My memory isn't sharp enough to say if these are the actual books or not. They seem much shorter now, but of course I'm now viewing them from an entirely different perspective.

I bought...

Choose your own Adventure books are unbelievably exciting! Who doesn't love a book where you can choose what you want to do? And you can die twenty different ways! You can also triumph too! This is a great book series for kids of all ages- even adults who are kids at heart!

I bought this set for my daughter when she was 9, thinking that she would love the books as much as I did. I was mistaken. She blew through them and moved on. It's not that she doesn't enjoy reading, beause she does. But I think today's kids have so many more exciting things available to them than we did, so it just doesn't have the same effect. For us, these books were our video games of the time!

So my advice to you would be to find just one of these books used, or borrow it at a library, and gauge your child's interest before buying these fairly expensive sets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gift Set, December 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Got this as a gift set for a child - friend who doesn't like to read so much.

I remember these from when I was a child. My brother liked them because you can "choose a path to follow" every few pages. It makes kids feel like they're taking part in an ACTIVE adventure... almost like a game. As a result, kids are more willing to sit down with the book and attempt reading.

As a teacher, I've recommended this to so many parents as a means to get children interested in reading. Since reading motivation has a lot to do with confidence, books like this are a bonus because they're active, exciting and use very basic language. Any 4-6 grader should be able to pick these up and enjoy them.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the reluctant reader, March 15, 2011

This review is from: Race Forever/Escape/Lost on the Amazon/Prisoner of the Ant People/Trouble on Planet Earth/War with the Evel Power Master (Choose Your Own Adventure 7-12) (Box Set 2) (Paperback)
My son is a very reluctant reader. He has mild autism that comes with a reading disability. He was held back in the third grade by my request, and even with that was always 1-2 years behind his grade level. This year he is in 5th grade. Since I purchased these for him, he has been voluntarily reading. He carries these books with him to school and is excited to "find out what will happen next". At the beginning of this year, his reading level was grade 3.5. Yesterday he did his AR test at school and he is a 5.1!! This is since he began reading these books. I finally found something that hooks him into a story.

He doesn't understand all of the words, but since his is into the story, he can get the word in context. This is a new skill for him. A "must buy" for those reluctant readers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep them entertained!, February 24, 2011

My children always love to read a good book but read them so quickly and are always left saying, "Now what?". This collection has been a great addition to our library keeping my 7 year old son entertained and eager to read the other books in this collection. If your child loves to read and loves a good adventure I highly recommend the Choose Your Own Adventure books! We shopped around for the best price and Amazon could not be beat.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT the original books, April 20, 2007
By
Laura Redish (Twin Cities, Minnesota) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My children have been enjoying some of my old Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80's, so when I saw this rerelease of several classic books for such a reasonable price, I bought it for them. Well, apparently R.A. Montgomery wasn't able to get the rights on the original illustrations, so he had a bunch of freelance designers from Thailand draw replacement pictures for each of them, and they are AWFUL. Not just 'different,' but shockingly, unignorably BAD -- they look like cartoons drawn carelessly by teenagers, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or anything else. The drawings in "Mystery of the Maya" are not bad but most of the others are so terrible they render the books unreadable. Leaving them unillustrated would have been better than this. Find used copies of the originals (most of which are for sale cheap on Amazon) or just pick something else to read.
