Biography

The Platters were a vocal group formed in LA in 1953. Their transformation from doo-wop to pop and rock and roll helped bridge the gap between tin pan alley and the modern era of pop music.

The Platters had a brief and fairly low-key career before they were taken under the wing of producer and songwriter Buck Ram. Ram added a female vocalist Zola Taylor and made Tony Williams the group’s lead… Read more in Amazon's The Platters Store

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Original Recordings!, June 5, 2001

"cpg132" (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Forever Gold (Audio CD)
I knew the price was too good to be true. The tracks on this CD are by the Platters but they were recently re-recorded. And while this is one vocal group whose voices have held up quite well over the years the keys of several of the songs had to be lowered to accommodate the singers aging vocal cords. The production quality of the tracks is nowhere near as good as the original classic recordings. And it seems the overall sound levels were recorded extremely low. Maybe in an effort to conceal the poor recording quality. If Amazon had revealed that these were not the original recordings I wouldn't have purchased the CD even at the extraordinary price. I think this is an important detail to leave off of the album description. The only reason I give it three stars is because of the Platters' voices. As I said, they have held up quite well but honestly they don't really hold up to the original recordings which are, unquestionably, classics. If you're on a tight budget and can't afford the originals then you can't go wrong with the price and you'll get a taste of what the originals are like. But if the music is more important then the price seek out the originals and make sure they *are* the original recordings. Cameron

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT ORIGINAL GROUP, November 27, 2010
This review is from: Forever Gold (Audio CD)
The original Platters were no longer singing together after 1970. After that time the group was most times performing under the name of The Buck Ram Platters. Not sure who is singing on these recordings.
