Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Yarni Taylor, a successful lawyer who has dedicated herself to helping "minority men caught up in the wrath," fights to keep her hustler husband out of prison in this anemic tale of treachery and dedication among the rich and ghetto-fabulous. After spending 10 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit, Des Taylor is pardoned, released and makes Yarni a wife and a mother. Des also returns to a life of hustling, and after two years of freedom is framed for another murder. Yarni swears to exonerate the man to whom she has devoted her life. As the couple work to keep Des free, they also contend with a myriad of minidramas—an attempted rape, a kidnapping and the murder of a loved one. Turner (A Hustler's Wife) spares no cliché in this thin story (the bling quotient is staggering), and readers may feel frustrated at the author's constant and simplistic explication of her characters' thoughts and actions. Fans of Turner's earlier works may find something to appreciate, but the uninitiated will have serious trouble. (Apr.)

I'm not going to sugar coat this review. The book made no sense whatsoever. First of all, the chances of a 15 year old girl captivating the mind of a seasoned hustler is not believeable. Then he meets her mother to ask her for permission to date her in full hustle gear, with a hustle mobile parked on the curb... I think not. Granted, the book is fictionally characterized, but the writer seems to try to base the theme on the realities of "the game." Not even close. It was the fairy tale version of young girls with rich dreams. I think this was a excuse to expose the use of street slang, and throw in a few clothing lable names for added effect. If you want to read about life in this perspective, then read "The Coldest Winter Ever" by Sister Souljah. She puts it down so real. And you walk away with a truer sense of reality when it's all said and done. Sorry Nikki... it's just not poppin. Peace.

I was so excited about reading this book. So far I have loved every book that Nikki Turner has ever written, except this once. I just didn't find myself on the edge of my seat like the others. This book was east to put down. The plot and sub-plots were predictable and the end left some unanswered questions. This one just didn't do it for me.

I really don't know what the hype is about this book. It was a disappointing read. I thought it would be exciting due to the reviews it was getting but instead it was boring. To me this book is on an immature level. I don't recommend this book to anyone.

Reading this book reminded me so much of my teenage years in the very late 80's and early 90's. It was as if Nikki Turner knew about all of my issues, as if she was living as me. I thought this book was very interesting. I thought the story of young Yarnie meeting Des was lovely. I once loved a man like Des and it brings back so many memories, some really great memories of the times we shared. Also other memories of the times that I shared with guys like Benji, terrible memories that I hate to think about. Yarnie had to learn just like the rest of us learned. The street life was not all that it was cracked up to be. She finally realized that without GOD in her life, no good thing would last but with GOD everything great was hers. This book was sweet at times and very hurtful at other times.I loved this book and I recommend it to everyone that is considering getting caught up in the game or has been a victim of it. Trust me, none of the money is worth it. I think GOD I was forturnate to get out without any serious problems, such as being addicted to drugs or going to prision. I loved this book and it encouraged me to keep pressing on!

Hustler's Wife is set in Richmond and after reading B-More Careful I was curious to see if Nikki Turner could do with the bad side of Richmond what Shannon Holmes did with the hard knock side of Baltimore.
First, let's be honest. This is a fairy tale. A girl's version of a street novel. It sugar coats the drug dealing lifestyle and portrays low down streetwalkers and ignorant high schoolers as heroines. If that's what you want in a book this ones dishes it up. I found it distasteful. Also, the book needed an editor. If you're going to ask me to part with my money the least you can do is come correct.

This book was terrible. How can Nikki Turner even call herself a writer with a straight face? There was no character development, she jumped around from place to place, and the whole story was unrealistic. Next time get a better editor too!

Nikki Turner is an excellent writer. A Hustler's Wife is not your "typical street fiction" book. It is more than that. Nikki introduced several character and some how managed to complete each of their story lines from the beginning to the end. Each time you thought that you had the story figured out a new twist would occur which made you want to read more and more. She used several strong MALE and FEMALE characters. The use of promoting education regardless of your situation was excellent. The best feature was the underline religious aspect. The main character went through several situations, but in the end she was connected to her spirituality and all of her "street ways" came around for good. It was very well written!
Our Book Club (A Sistah's Expression) recently had a phone discussion with Nikki and we enjoyed her personality as much as we enjoyed reading her book. Kudos to Nikki Turner!

Drama quickly unfolds in the first chapter of "A Hustler's Wife" as the reader realizes that Des, one of the main characters is sentenced for murder and is hauled to prison. The love of his life, Yarni, the narrator of the story is stunned and doesn't know what to do. Yarni met Des at the tender age of fifteen and he quickly became a huge part of her life. When Des goes to prison, Yarni, who recently graduated from high school, must fend for herself. She quickly assimilates herself to Des' world of drug dealers, hustlers and gold diggers in order to keep herself in the lifestyle she's used to. Yarni soon becomes engrossed in the game but doesn't realize how deep she is, until a a series of events makes her take a look at the life she made for herself.
I was instantly caught up in the plot of "A Hustler's Wife" but was soon scratching my head as the first few pages began with Des receiving a guilty verdict for murder. It then jumped to Yarni remembering when she first heard about the murder to Yarni remembering the first time she met Des. Confused? So was I. Eventually, I got used to Turner's writing style and started enjoying the clever, but poorly executed, plot. However, my attention was so drawn to the grammatical errors and lack of character and scene development that it took away from the story. Also, I was introduced to so many characters, I started to lose track of who was who. As the story became more intricate, I was jumped from scene to scene with very little smooth transitions. At times, I wasn't sure who Yarni was conversing with and at one point, the writer contradicted herself (which just added to my confusion). Overall, if Turner had put more effort in editing "A Hustler's Wife" I would have loved it. Unfortunately, the choppy layout of the story took away from, what would have been, a great urban story.
