Lonely hearts,
By A Customer
This review is from: Forever Man (Paperback)
Back Cover description: Tate Montgomery Needed A New Life. And Johanna Patterson was the kind of woman who could make him leave the past behind. But how would he ever convince this reclusive spinster to open up her heart to him and his boys? It seemed to Johanna that she had always been alone. Until the day that Tate Montgomery turned up at her farm with a ready-made family, and an offer that would change her life forever. The book moves well until the sister-in-law shows up. I found that part of the story annoying. Johanna grows to trust Tate, she grows to love the boys and they put their pasts to rest. I didn't find myself crying, so maybe I missed something that the other reviewers saw.

Tate Montgomery needed a new life,
By Anza Carrillo "heavenlyanza" (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Forever Man (Paperback)
Tate Montgomery was fleeing the memories of his bad marriage that had ended in tragedy. His wife had hated him and farm life, and had never been the mother his two boys deserved. He moves west from Ohio, looking for a farm to invest in and a place to settle down. He finds both in Johanna Patterson's farm. The only problem is, he'll have to marry Johanna because she refuses to sell the farm to anyone. A marriage of convenience seems to be the solution for all involved - Tate will have a place to raise his boys, Johanna will have the help she so desperately needs, and the boys will have a mother. Love doesn't figure into the equation, or does it?
Johanna Patterson was used to being alone. Her mother had died ten years before, and her father had never been one to show her much affection or consideration. Once he died, Johanna found herself the sole owner of the farm, but unable to keep up with all of the work. Johanna didn't want to marry Tate, or anyone for that matter, but it really was for the best she decided. Johanna didn't want to rely on any man again. She had been hurt by her father and her former lover, and she knew better than to trust a man. Still, Tate and his two boys find a place in her heart, and she begins to wonder if this marriage of convenience could turn into a love match. I know that other reviewers gave this book a high rating, but I just couldn't. I read the first 100 pages or so, and never did I feel a connection with any of the characters. The book was so dull. I'm a fanatic about reading a book to the end, but there is no way I'll be able to finish this book because it is just so dull. I'm really disappointed because I expected a heart-warming emotional read. Instead, the only tears I could possibly shed after reading this book are tears of boredom.

I'm a fan of Davidson and I like most everything she's written. (I've read more than half of her books, of which she is the sole author). With respect to the one-star review, it's true, this book doesn't have life-threatening floods or gun battles, but it IS a good story with very believable and likable characters. Both the hero and heroine have their secrets and their demons, but they grow to love and accept each other over the course of the story. If you're looking for a gripping, edge of your seat suspense, look elsewhere; but if you're looking for an enjoyable, well-paced, realistic romance to kick back and relax with, this is for you. PS- Any woman who's been taken advantage of by the teenage guy 'I love you and I'm going to marry you so we don't need to wait' song and dance will relate to this story.

Good story,

I'm beginning to think a lot of people who read 19th century novels like this one think the stories should fall into a fomular where everything is perfect and ends equally as perfect. And, when they don't they give them a bad review. This book is well written and the story is realistic, and as far as I'm concerned that's what counts.
