Editorial Reviews

The Marvelettes Forever More: The Complete Motown Albums Vol. 2 The final albums in a storied career, plus 25 unreleased tracks! When, in 1961, the Marvelettes climbed to the top of the national pop charts with their first single, "Please Mr. Postman," they brought Motown with them, helping to establish the little label from Detroit. That first phase of the group's career was thoroughly chronicled in Forever: The Complete Motown Albums Vol. 1, a 3-CD limited edition set that brought together the group's first six albums and every stray single, B-side and rarity from the early era. Now, on the 50th anniversary of "Please Mr. Postman" becoming Motown's first No. 1 hit, comes Forever More: The Complete Motown Albums Vol. 2. The 4-CD set, with 108 songs, collects the group's highly sought-after, final four albums, originally released 1967-1970?The Marvelettes (a/k/a "The Pink Album"), Sophisticated Soul, In Full Bloom and The Return Of The Marvelettes?and more of the non-LP singles, B-sides and rarities issued on various compilations. Featured in the set are the group's best-known songs from the era, including the chart hits "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game," "When You're Young And In Love," "My Baby Must Be A Magician," "Here I Am Baby" and "That's How Heartaches Are Made," as well as fans' favorite album tracks. But that's not all: the set also includes a disc of 24 "Lost & Found" Marvelettes tracks from the Motown vaults, featuring never-before-heard songs written and produced by Smokey Robinson, Norman Whitfield, Mickey Stevenson, Johnny Bristol and more. These "vault gems" are from the group's entire career, 1961-70, and each one begs the question: "How come this didn't come out?" Other rarities: an unreleased, extended mix of "When You're Young And In Love," with a spoken intro; the long Anthology LP version of "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game;" a U.K.-only version of the LP track "I'm Gonna Hold On Long As I Can," with an extended intro; and various vault tracks, like "Love Is Good" and "Poor Little Rich Girl," found on U.K. CD releases in recent years. And, for serious fans, included are the extremely rare mono versions of the albums The Marvelettes and Sophisticated Soul; the latter was never issued commercially. All of this fabulous music featured in the 4-CD Forever More: The Complete Motown Albums Vol. 2 is housed in a beautifully designed digi-pak in keeping with the look and size of Vol. 1, with a 40-page booklet stuffed with gorgeous, rare (and classic) photos, reproductions of the original LP artwork, detailed track annotations, and an essay by Motown chronicler Stu Hackel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Marvelettes, Done Right December 14, 2011
Format:Audio CD
THE MARVELETTES, FOREVER MORE VOLUME 2, years in the making , well worth the decades of waiting for their catalog of music to be released on CD. This 4 CD is a treasure trove of of classics, gems, and newly discovered finds, in a classy package with a beautiful photo of Gladys, Wanda & Katherine, with informative liner notes, and unseen photos. It compliments the music inside. So many songs, including stereo and mono versions of THE MARVELETTES Pink Album, and SOPHISTICATED SOUL. And there are differences with the mixes, most fascinatingly on KEEP OFF NO TRESPASSING with the mono mix containing different background vocals, a sax solo and more. Having been released on CD in stereo only in the 80's, it is a bonus to have the mono versions and to have these classic albums once again in print, and part of this elaborate, much in demand set. Tacked at the end of Disc 1 are longer versions of the absolute classics WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE, the dynamic fiery gospel'ish I'M GONNA HOLD ON LONG AS I CAN , and THE HUNTER GETS CAPTURED BY THE GAME. THE HUNTER though does not have the cold ending as found on the Anthology album as it states, but has the fade out ending that was on THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION. The cold ending though is on mono on Disc 3 as found on THE MARVELETTES Pink album in mono.

I've been waiting not only years, but decades to have IN FULL BLOOM and THE RETURN OF on CD. The CD versions bring out the voices, backgrounds & instrumentation so clearly, it just surrounds the room with the magic of their music. Many great , deep album cuts on these 2 latter day albums, and with the programming capabilities of CD's, it brings new life to sequencing the tracks in different ways to hear the nuances of each song in different order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelettes, Marvelous & Complete! December 14, 2011
By rollo
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This collection is the second half of the complete Marvelettes Albums on Motown and it is a treasure trove. To be brief, this box contains the Marvelettes last four albums plus two more albums worth of rare & unreleased tracks all on four cd's. Cd's #1,#2 & #4 contain STEREO recordings which sound magnificent as 24 bit remasters. Cd #3 contains two albums+ of MONO tracks. This collection should be the model for all future Motown collections and or anthologies. Hooray for Hippo Select. Keep the STEREO coming ya'll. One thousand stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hip-O Brings Us the Second Half of the Marvelettes Story December 15, 2011
By Kenneth
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Worth the wait and more than worth the price, this lavish 4-CD set sums up the second half of the great Marvelettes' career at Motown. The first chapter "Forever" was dominated by the late Gladys Horton, whose effervescence and youth powered the Marvelettes' biggest hits such as "Please Mr. Postman" and "Beechwood 4-5789." This second and final chapter documents Wanda Young's tenure as lead singer of the group, that is, except for the first album represented on this set. While both singers were in the group together, peacefully coexisting and sharing leads until 1967 when Gladys retired, it couldn't have been any accident that in the early days, Gladys performed on the hit singles while Wanda usually sang on the flip sides or album tracks, such as "So Long Baby" and "Angel." It wasn't until Smokey Robinson began to pay a lot of attention to the group, followed by Gladys Horton's retirement a couple years later, that Wanda really came into her own.

The two singers could sound alike at times, though Gladys was rougher edged and Wanda could sing in a high falsetto, used to great advantage on their early (not on this set) "Locking Up My Heart" in its chorus. But Wanda's voice was perfection on the slinky, "sophisticated soul" (the name of the second album on this set) in songs such as "The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game," "When You're Young and in Love," "My Baby Must Be a Magician," "Destination: Anywhere," "Seeing is Believing," and "That's How Heartaches Are Made," all of which are on this set.

This set spotlights the last four Marvelettes albums, the last of which, ironically titled "The Return of the Marvelettes," was really a Wanda Young solo project which Motown decided instead to market as a Marvelettes album. All four albums are outstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally... January 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Marvelettes were always aware they did not get prime treatment at Motown. When I did a cover story on them for Goldmine Magazine Katherine Schaffner told me how happy they were to be on the cover of a prestigious magazine, "something that never happened to us." It made me very sad because these talented ladies from the lovely town of Inkster (which publicity always seemed to hint was some backwater place, which it never was and certainly isn't now)
reflected great talent from the get-go and their stage act not only equalled but surpassed any other Motown act, especially their complicated choreography and clever routines using props. Through the years the group became more polished, their recordings became more polished and what started as a down home high school group ended up a sophisticated mature act with worldwide experience. Because of the early teen pop hits much of the public has never been much aware of the second stage, the gorgeously orchestrated albums with some of Motown's best (and most unsung) music. Finally with this gorgeous set, the Marvelettes get their just due and at last their deserved place in the entertainment sun. The splendid remastering here is a revelation; the recordings were even more impressive than we thought or knew 40 years ago when they were released and the packaging is top rate, something the Marvelettes never got from Motown with the exception of the cover to "Sophisticated Soul," which Suzanne DePasse herself supervised. The unreleased recordings are all fun (I actually heard most of them maybe 30 years ago because I was doing the liner notes for an album of Marvelettes rarities that never came out) and of course the eternal question will always be, "Why unreleased?
