5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and magical
I loved this book! I really liked the way the author used the beauty of flowers throughout the book. It has a great story-line ~ magical and believable. Laurel was a very like-able character. As a 14 year-old girl, I could totally relate to her. And I loved the ending ~ it was perfect. I liked this book so much, I read it again a few days later! I hope this author...

Are you crazy about flowers? If the answer is yes, you should read this book.

What made me read Forget-Her-Nots was its original concept. Flowerspeaking is so cool, and it immediately attracted me. I really enjoyed reading about the different meanings of the flowers, and I think that was perfectly explored in here. The writing is pretty good, and though I had some problems with the characters, I liked the plot.

Laurel was weird to me. Sometimes she seemed older, sometimes younger, sometimes she was so mature, but others... not so much. Some of her choices and actions struck me as childish and sometimes stupid. And it really annoyed me that she did some very bad choices and didn't even understand it and then was so whiny about it.

I thought her relationship with Justin was also quite underdeveloped: I didn't get what she saw in him, and how they'd be together, IF they'd be together, I didn't even like him! Well, not that, I simply didn't get to know him that well, as a character. To be honest, I think Everett is better developed than Justin. I actually liked him, till he became a jerk and did something I hated. Ugh, boys! :P

So, this is a really cute debut novel filled with friendship, awesome family secrets and, surprise surprise, flowers!

3.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Chick Loves Lit, July 22, 2011
This review is from: Forget-Her-Nots (Hardcover)
Forget-Her-Nots has a unique plot, as it deals with the language of flowers. I have yet to read a book that comes close to dealing with this sort of `magic,' so I had a lot of fun hearing the meanings of the flowers and reading about them being used.

Overall I was slightly disappointed, because the novel seemed more middle grade than young adult to me. The plot was very basic, and the characters were not as deep as I normally like. I did not get to read much about the boarding school, which is one of my favorite book topics, so I was sad about that - and I was confused about the friendships our main character had. One of the girls was constantly mean and yet still remained in the circle of friends throughout, and I couldn't really figure out why.

I really like the cover of this book, and liked the basic set up of the plot - I was just hoping for a little more complexity. A good pick if you're into flowers and are looking for an easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kritters Ramblings, May 4, 2011
This review is from: Forget-Her-Nots (Hardcover)
Wow. From the description I thought this book was going to be too out there for me - boy was I wrong, dead wrong. I purchased because she was going to be coming to my local indie bookstore and I had seen earlier that her signings were eventful with flowers and more than your normal author visit. I am more than glad that I grabbed this one.

A young girl who has recently lost her mom and is now trying to figure out where she goes from there. I will not spoil this one because I want everyone to stop what they are doing and go grab this one. Throughout this book, she is learning the language of flowers and just for that reason this book is whimsical and romantic. I definitely know what flowers I want included in my bridal bouquet and what ones to send to my mom to make her feel loved.

A book for young and old, mothers and daughters - each will enjoy this read for a different and unique reason. I will be passing this one off to my mom. A short and sweet review for a short and sweet book.

Check out the blog tomorrow for my visit to One More Page to see Amy Brecount White and her tussie-mussies.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Meaning of Flowers, May 2, 2011
This review is from: Forget-Her-Nots (Hardcover)
In doing research for a project on the Victorian Era, Laurel comes across a book about the language of flowers. As she researching. she recalls memories of her mother's love for flowers. Each flower has a meaning, a language most people realize it exists. Laurel presents on a unique day, when the boys are visiting campus.

She learns more and more about flowers while giving them to other girls to help them fall in love, remember facts for tests, and keep love on course. Laurel finds herself finally gaining a friend at the boarding school, but all the pressure and judgment starts catching up with her.

There's something dark going on with Laurel. Something's eating her up inside. She struggles to understand her mother's death and the connection with flowers, dealing with school and social pressures, and finding a way to reach her grandmother. Can she figure out what it is before it's too late?

My Thoughts: A great romantic tale about a girl struggling to find herself after her mother's death and learning she's inherited a special gift. I loved reading about the different meaning of flowers and how Laurel uses them to help others, including herself in the romance department. I'm hoping this story will continue.

This book is really sweet! First of all, I think the cover is gorgeous! The cover is a bit girly and pink, but I still really love it. I think it depicts the book really well.

Amy Brecount White wrote a really beautiful book. It made me really conscious of all the different flowers that there are.

I absolutely devoured this book. I started reading it the day I got it and finished reading it within 24 hours. This book was written really well, and very gracefully. I heavily recommend this book.

I'm one of the lucky ones to have been able to read this pre-published. It is a unique fantasy that will delight all readers with a compelling mystery and lots of fun romance! You will also come out learning a lot about the Victorian meaning to tussy mussies (or flower bouquets) that has stayed with me ever since I read the manuscript. If you love historical romance as well as contemporary YA plotlines, this is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cute and light read, March 2, 2010
This review is from: Forget-Her-Nots (Hardcover)
Laurel has been passing the time since her mother's death trying to cope and heal at Avondale School, her new boarding school and her mother's alma mater. On her fourteenth birthday, she receives a letter from her mother and mysterious bouquet of flowers that seem to ignite her special, intense feelings near flowers, and slowly she discovers her ability of Flower-speaking--magically enhancing the meaning of flowers to influence the lives of people around her. Laurel is giddy to discover her ability, an art that brings her closer to her mother, but she is still unskilled, and in a school full of girls, emotions and magic can spin out of control rather quickly.

Amy Brecount White has taken an intriguing Victorian art and given it a modern, magical spin in Forget-Her-Nots. The book is brimming with history and flower knowledge and meanings, which adds to the novel's appeal and sets it apart from other novels of its sort. Though Laurel is still grieving for her mother, she is also starting a new phase in her life at high school by learning to fit in and by making friends and crushing on a guy from the next school over, and it those details that make Forget-Her-Nots more relatable to its readers, and the magical and creative use of flower meanings make the book unique and fun. There are a lot of simple, but important lessons that go along with growing up in this novel, like learning to confront your issues on your own, dealing with mean people, and learning to hold on to the good memories while moving on that readers can appreciate. Along with the lively cast of characters dialogue and mishaps and triumphs with Laurel's ability, Forget-Her-Nots is a wonderful, light read for younger teens.

Cover Comments: I like how soft and pink and pretty this cover is--very nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget Her Nots, August 7, 2011
This review is from: Forget-Her-Nots (Hardcover)
An intriguing new book about a paranormal ability that involves no monsters just the power of magic. This book was a breath of fresh air from everything violent in paranormal fantasy novels. Not that I don't enjoy those types of books, but I absolutely loved the premise of this book - the magic that the flowers contained and how it could be used to help others.

Laurel is an every day girl - trying to fit in at a new school and letting her newfound power become manipulated by the swarms of girls that want a little extra luck at love and romance. I like the different flowers and how some are more overpowering than others. The concept of this novel was really different and really stood out to me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review from The Book Monsters, August 2, 2011
This review is from: Forget-Her-Nots (Hardcover)
Laurel, a young teen, is still grieving for the loss of her mother. Despite this loss, her father, haunted by the memories of their home, decides that it would be in the family's best interest to get a change of scenery. Thus, Laurel is installed at Avondale School. And although Laurel is adjusting to these changes, things just are not how she images they should be. When Laurel is given the chance to connect with her mother on a small level by giving a presentation on the Language of Flowers, she jumps at the chance. This small presentation ends up having a huge impact on her life as she soon discovers that every flower has a meaning and like flowers, appearances can be deceiving.

Forget-Her-Nots is a beautifully written and very visually pleasing novel. It is not often that I find a novel that by the end leaves me with the feeling that it was both educational as well as entertaining. But somehow this is exactly what Brecount White has done. I was completely fascinated at the depth of knowledge that Brecount White shows to her readers. The whole novel is paced nicely in a way that both kept my attention and continued to surprise me with its flower references.

To be honest, I am completely enchanted with Forget-Her-Nots and its author. The novel was adorable and filled with humor and powerful messages that leave the reader with a nice tingly feeling. While the novel is aimed a younger readers, it is possible that readers of all ages will find something to pique their interest. I will admit that as an older reader, I did have a little bit of difficulty relating to Laurel and some of her friends. However, this difficulty was very easily overlooked due to the rest of the novel's enchantment. If you are looking for a cute novel that will give you something to think about long after you have finished the last page, then look no further. Forget-Her-Nots is an enchanting novel that will completely change the way you look at flowers and their hidden meanings.
