Book Description

April 13, 1989
The ancient One Land had been broken into six warring fragments. And in Lamath, one of those fragments, Seagryn was getting married to the lovely Elaryl. The problems that beset the Land couldn't have bothered him less. Then suddenly, he turned into a savage beast - a monstrous tugolith. He was a wizard, a magic user in Lamath, where magic was anathema! And shortly thereafter, he was an outcast, and marriage to Elaryl was forever forbidden. From then on, things grew difficult for the new powershaper. Sheth, the mightiest wizard of all, soon became his enemy. Dark, the boy whose prophecies were always accurate, involved him in the Conspiracy to create a dragon that would ravage the land. And somehow, despite his power and good intentions, things never worked out as Seagryn intended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for a Light Fantasy Read, December 10, 2011
This review is from: The Forging of the Dragon (Book 1 of Wizard and Dragon) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first book in the "Wizard and Dragon" duology which is a prequel to the "Pelman the Powershaper" trilogy. I can never really decide if I like these books or not. Sometimes the narration is witty and humorous and the plot is fairly original and at other times the dialogue (inner and between characters) is very forced and the plot predictable and contrived. Good for a light read, but don't set your expectations too high.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent prequel, June 3, 2004

This review is from: The Forging of the Dragon (Book 1 of Wizard and Dragon) (Mass Market Paperback)
"The Forging of the Dragon" explains why Vicia-Heinox came to be -- and is an excellent prequel to the three books Hughes wrote earlier about the One Land (and its various "fragments").

If you read "The Prophet of Lamath" or "The Power and the Prophet" or "The Wizard in Waiting," you're sure to like this book, as the few flaws in those books (mostly dealing with how Hughes dealt with his minor characters) have been rectified.

It's not a really highbrow book, by any means, but there is a solid moral and ethical basis that makes this book truly engaging.

Only authors I can think of that might be like Hughes are the current team of LaHaye and Jenkins -- but this is far less heavy-handed and far more lyrical to read.

Five stars. Highly recommended.

Barb Caffrey

5.0 out of 5 stars Why doesn't Hughes get more credit?, December 8, 2003

This review is from: The Forging of the Dragon (Book 1 of Wizard and Dragon) (Mass Market Paperback)
Like the Pelewan series, this series is absolutely stellar. A little light, but you won't find a better told story than this series. Isn't that what is all about? If you like Lawrence Watt Evans, you'll love Hughes fantasy books. Just fantastic stories with believable and real characters.
