If you've ever had it with the constraints, bureaucracy, limited scope and limited opportunities of traditional schooling, if you've ever wondered if there's more, then this book's for you. These students' stories are an introduction to the possibilities accessible outside of an inflexible system.

I also highly recommend this author's guide for pursuing your own education: Opportunities After 'High School'.

This is a great, inspiring book for anyone interested in taking a non-traditional, self-directed educational path or in understanding how others can do so. Wes Beach is an expert at helping young people turn their passions into career routes and at helping them get into higher educational programs, when desired, without the tedium of traditional high school. Each chapter presents a different example of how young people can make their way in this world while retaining control over their own lives, learning, and sense of personal integrity.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who feels that the current educational system is not doing its job in motivating and preparing students to use their own unique talents to benefit themselves and society. The determination of the students as they tell their own story is inspiring. I especially appreciate the tools the author gives us to navigate through the cumbersome rules and attitudes of a system that seems determined to suppress the natural desire to learn and excel. Both parents and students can greatly benefit from this book.

"Forging Paths" is a great help to students ready to move on to the rest of their lives. The stories shared in this book are encouraging and affirming for students and families interested in the potential risks and rewards of a nontypical education. A "must read" for those interested in facing challenges with innovation.

In my recently published book, From School to Homeschool: Should You Homeschool Your Gifted Child?, I lamented that the stories of gifted homeschoolers had not really been told yet. That was before I read Forging Paths. Though the "kids" in this book are almost grown when they start on their paths, and what they do isn't what most people would call "homeschooling," each one of these unique stories adds to our collected understanding of what is possible when it comes to getting the education we need. Wes Beach's book centers around the stories of individuals who chose unusual paths, but even in their unusualness, they offer us new templates for the way education can happen. Inflexible, one-size-fits-all education is a thing of the past. Books like this one are starting to write the story of the future, in which all kids and adults are able to forge the path that is right for them in seeking the education they need and crave.

Wes Beach's ideas empower and motivate as his book guides and demonstrates how to take one's education, and thereby future, into her/his own hands.

The author describes the variety of choices available to homeschooled students (or for anyone who wants to take education and life experiences into his or her own control). The stories of different personalities, talents, interests and decisions are helpful and inspiring. Supportive of homeschooling, the author also includes specific guidelines on how to present non-traditional experiences clearly and understandably to those outside the homeschooling world.
