Book Description

December 2002
How could survivors of the Burma Road, the Siberian Gulag, or Nazi atrocities forgive those who harmed them? How can representatives of entire populations--Australian Aborigines, African Americans, and black South Africans--be reconciled with whites who exploited them? And how can the offenders find the grace to apologize?

Michael Henderson writes about dozens of remarkable people of many nations and faiths who have, by repentance and forgiveness, been able to break the chain of hate through repentance and forgiveness.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

While many books on the market encourage readers to learn to forgive their enemies, this is the first that focuses on the "forgiveness movement" in which the leader of countries or other organizations ask forgiveness from those their countries have injured. Stories include the development of "National Sorry Day" in Australia regarding abuse of the Aboriginal people, the efforts of Nelson Mandela and others in South Africa to forgive the horrors of the past and focus on building a new country, and the apologies given by the United States to the Japanese interred in camps during World War II, one of whom states here that the apology was much more important than the reparitions. It is especially instructive to see how people can move past their anger and how forgiveness often serves as the catalyst for major change. A worthwhile addition to conflict resolution, political science, history, and sociology collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgiveness: Breaking the Chain of Hate, March 19, 2003

In this time of imminent war and global frustration, nothing seems to be more poignant than the act of forgiving. In this book, the author tells stories about country-to-country forgiveness, religion-to-religion, etc. I believe if more people read this book and actually acted on what they read, we would be able to solve global and local issues with love and consideration, rather then act on anger impulses. If you are concerned with the way your world is reacting, you should purchase this book and use it in your daily works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgiveness, Breaking the Chain of Hate, March 17, 2002
By A Customer
I was inspired by Michael Henderson's FORGIVENESS, Breaking the Chain of Hate, the first time I read it early in the year of 2001. After the September 11th terrorist acts, this book seemed particularly poignant.
I was intrigued recently to find that there is a new updated version of the original book, with a new foreword by Gandhi's grandson. His observation of the timeliness and the importance of this work is keen. FORGIVENESS, Breaking the Chain of Hate is an inspired work.
Everyone should read this book to help cope with the aftermath of September 11th.

5.0 out of 5 stars PLEASE, You Must Read This Book!!, August 7, 2010
This review is from: Forgiveness: Breaking the Chain of Hate (Paperback)
PLEASE, You Must Read This Book !! The paradox between War/Resentment/Hate versus Peace/Forgiveness/Love lives in the hearts and minds of all of us. This phenomenal book, FORGIVENESS, Breaking the Chain of Hate, by Michael Henderson took me on a journey toward a deeper understanding of the complexity of world issues related to War and Peace . . . only to find myself looking in the mirror and evaluating my own battle with the paradoxical issues. I am better able to serve the path to love and peace after having read this important work. PLEASE, You Must Read This Book !!
