Book Description

March 1, 2002
Moving accounts of how individuals and groups who suffered crime and injustice have forgiven the offenders, and how former oppressors have apologized and atoned for their acts throughout the world. From World War II to the present moment of Northern Ireland and Bosnia, forgiveness leads to reconciliation and healing for victims and even for criminals. Inspirational introduction to a worldwide movement led by Nobel Peace Prize winners and clergy of all faiths.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

First published in 1999, this compelling international look at forgiveness has been updated in light of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Henderson, a journalist and associate of Moral Re-Armament (an international network recognized by the UN), persuasively argues that the world needs less recrimination and retribution and more dialog and reparation. He discusses the importance of official apologies in situations like apartheid in South Africa, colonialism in Australia, and the ongoing conflicts in Northern Ireland and the Middle East. To show that international peace is a possibility, he cites examples of victims of war, terrorism, and harsh regimes transcending their initial hatred of their oppressors. Timely and well written, this important work offers a challenging worldview. Recommended for both public and academic libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgiveness: Breaking the Chain of Hate, March 19, 2003

In this time of imminent war and global frustration, nothing seems to be more poignant than the act of forgiving. In this book, the author tells stories about country-to-country forgiveness, religion-to-religion, etc. I believe if more people read this book and actually acted on what they read, we would be able to solve global and local issues with love and consideration, rather then act on anger impulses. If you are concerned with the way your world is reacting, you should purchase this book and use it in your daily works.

I was inspired by Michael Henderson's FORGIVENESS, Breaking the Chain of Hate, the first time I read it early in the year of 2001. After the September 11th terrorist acts, this book seemed particularly poignant.
I was intrigued recently to find that there is a new updated version of the original book, with a new foreword by Gandhi's grandson. His observation of the timeliness and the importance of this work is keen. FORGIVENESS, Breaking the Chain of Hate is an inspired work.
Everyone should read this book to help cope with the aftermath of September 11th.

5.0 out of 5 stars PLEASE, You Must Read This Book!!, August 7, 2010
PLEASE, You Must Read This Book !! The paradox between War/Resentment/Hate versus Peace/Forgiveness/Love lives in the hearts and minds of all of us. This phenomenal book, FORGIVENESS, Breaking the Chain of Hate, by Michael Henderson took me on a journey toward a deeper understanding of the complexity of world issues related to War and Peace . . . only to find myself looking in the mirror and evaluating my own battle with the paradoxical issues. I am better able to serve the path to love and peace after having read this important work. PLEASE, You Must Read This Book !!
