An Excellent Historical Resource!,

Mike Gasciogne has done a superlative job constructing a history of the British Isles that is based solely on ancient historical records. Current archeological views often ignore the testimony of extant records and base conclusions only on what can be seen in the ruins and artifacts found. This book gives the other side of the story - the voice of the written records left behind by our ancestors to tell us about themselves.Using ancient genealogies, the book shows how people spread out over the world after the Great Flood, thereby tracing the actual origins of the people who now populate Europe, England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. It also provides a good overview of what ancient historians recorded about the history and spiritual beliefs of their native lands and bordering civilizations, including the impact and spread of Christianity. I highly recommend it as an informative and well-written resource for anyone interested in the ancient history of the West from the perspective of the people who were a part of it.

A fascinating look at how the oldest histories of the human race were transformed into myth, and how the shreds of fact behind the myths point to (and fill out) the story given in the Bible. Delivered with the care and reserve we expect of our best scientists. The only thing I've ever read that puts the pieces together in a way that makes good sense.

The History I Wish I'd Learned in School,

Like Euhemerus, I have long believed the Greek and Roman mythologies were based on real events, but I failed in my own attempts to decipher them. Gascoigne, however, does a masterful job making sense of divergent historical accounts. He begins in the ancient Middle East and continues to England after the Roman and Saxon invasions. I have checked many of his original sources and find him to be an accurate and perceptive scholar. Since Gascoigne has done the difficult work of mining a mountain of historical sources, his readers can settle in for an adventure that is pure gold.
