Accused of crimes he did not commit, Kyr Astaldereg has been forced into hiding. Accompanied by his long-time friend Thoma, a member of the sinister Chungtao Crime Syndicate, and Sephteria, an exotic and beautiful girl who claims to be an elf, Kyr finds himself drawn into a forgotten, subterranean world filled with beings thought to exist only in legend. There he stumbles upon an ancient war being fought against a power so terrible it has enslaved mankind without their knowledge. The only hope for the future of humanity lies with Kyr and his friends as they work to fulfill a series of prophecies long lost to the human race.

I don't read a lot of Sci-Fi/Fantasy books unless they are highly recommended by people who usually don't read the genre themselves. I've read the classics: "Lord of the Rings," Chronicles of Narnia, etc. That being said, I promised myself that if I didn't get into "Forgotten Prophecies," I would stop reading after Chapter 5. Chapter 1 hooked me, and I couldn't put it down. I'm not a morning person, but I woke up early to read this book! After work, I'd go home, kiss my sweetie, and went straight to the bathroom just so I could have some time by myself to read it. If I could've gotten away with reading it at work, I would've read it. The characters are compelling, the story is wonderful, and I can't wait for Volume 2 in what will hopefully be a series. After only the first few pages, there was suddenly nothing else I wanted to read.

I had the priviledge of reading this book before it made it to the shelves and I must say I am highly impressed with it. Mr. Karnowski does a wonderful job of combining a futuristic time period with a Tolkein-like heritage. Secrets and mystery, character growth and unsettling change are the types of things you can expect as well as travels from Tokoyo-like cities to the depths of the Earth itself. Well worth it, I'm already awaiting the next one.

One of the best books I've read all year. From the very start, you can identify with the main characters. One is your every-man reluctant hero, the other is your dark side, amplified a hundred times and brought to life. Though they don't have any knowledge of each other, the reader can sense that they're on a collision course from the very start.
