5.0 out of 5 stars I've never fell so in love with a series
I read this entire set and was completly blow away. The characters really came to life for me , I would love to see this series made into a movie.Everything you could ask for in a book, adventure, romance, suspense, heartache and humor.I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Alright, but hard to find...
The series in question was one of the first that I read involving the Drow and the Underdark in general. I grew up reading the Ravenloft and Dragonlance collections, when I discovered the realms, it was a breath of fresh air.

The series in question was one of the first that I read involving the Drow and the Underdark in general. I grew up reading the Ravenloft and Dragonlance collections, when I discovered the realms, it was a breath of fresh air.

Starlight and Shadows does have a few issues, most of which have been covered by people who have posted previous reviews... how Liriel seems to be one of the most powerful drow to ever walk the surface, yet there is little explanation for it, gaining the trust of people left and right (Despite the overwhelming prejudice and hatred the surface races have for the drow), and how inept the villains always come across, despite some of them having much more elaborate and 'evil' plans that come to fruition in other books concerning the Underdark.

My biggest gripe, however, is that the boxed set and even the single books, have been out of print for some time, so they are hard to find in a passable condition. You can expect to pay an arm and a leg to pick them up from most sellers online, which is a shame.

While the series as a whole adds to the mythos concerning the drow, it can be skipped with little impact on anyone's enjoyment of the Realms.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best trilogies of the Forgotten Realms, March 28, 2009

This review is from: Forgotten Realms Starlight & Shadows: Gift Set (Daughter of the Drow, Tangled Webs, Windwalker) (Paperback)
This is simply one of the best trilogies of the Forgotten Realms, and definitely one of the best Realms authors. A must-have, and not only for those interested in the Drow but Realms lore in general.

When i think of drow, i think of salvatore. Some inconsistencies in character development in this. However a good read.

Hopefully more later ? :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Good deal, August 3, 2008
This review is from: Forgotten Realms Starlight & Shadows: Gift Set (Daughter of the Drow, Tangled Webs, Windwalker) (Paperback)
The books you buy would cost much more by themselves, unless you catch them on sale somewhere local. So money wise if you like these books, this is a deal.

Now I'll say this, the first two books are real page turners.Great reads and enjoyed every second. The last book however was just an epic failure.I will not spoil it for you,as some might like the last book.It was just not the kind of thing I enjoy whatsoever.

3.0 out of 5 stars As a series it falls short, July 9, 2008

After reading Elaine's other Forgotten Realms series I have developed a bit of a love hate relationship with her books. I love them because they have such well written characters. I hate them because they often get washed up with too many well written characters and jumpy plots.

The first book was great. The second was good but a little frustrating. The last was well written but a waste of time. The author introduces too many characters with too many story lines. Characters you think are critical to the plot suddenly get written off or simply disappear with little explanation. There are also plenty of characters from other books who get pulled in for no particular reason other than to perhaps create some kind of book crossover. We get so wrapped up in the introduction and stories of other character that the plot never really develops and in the end all the introductions just seem irrelevant. The last book was almost difficult to finish as it didn't even seem necessary. The whole time I was reading it I really had no idea where it was going and the conclusion was just anti-climatic and disappointing. You could probably skip forward to the last two chapters and not feel like you missed anything. Actually you might want to skip that book all together.

On the positive side these books do a fantastic job bringing us details about the life and struggles of the Drow.

If I were to rate the three books individually I'd give them a 5, 3, and 2 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Didn't Really Work For Me, June 27, 2008

This review is from: Forgotten Realms Starlight & Shadows: Gift Set (Daughter of the Drow, Tangled Webs, Windwalker) (Paperback)
I picked up this trilogy recently because I like the Forgotten Realms universe, and I have enjoyed Cunningham's previous books. However, this series just didn't work for me. (As much as I like AD&D novels, there are some that I just don't connect with.)

The books in the trilogy are well written, and the characters are fully developed. The geography ranges from Waterdeep to the Underdark to the Abyss. All of the elements are in place, but I found myself skimming through several pages as the series progressed. I couldn't get invested in one of the main characters, and lost interest in his relationship with the other main character.

Fans of Drow stories or the Forgotten Realms should check out the first book. This series may not have worked for me, but it's possible that you will like it. I give it four stars since the author obviously respects the Forgotten Realms environment, characters, and its fans.

Trial Tribulations, plots in Plots, surprise this has them all and the writing style of Elain Cunningham once again tied me to this trilogy until I had finished it, which then prompted me to hunt for more of the same from this author, especially having read all of her earlier works. I hope there is more to come
