Book Description

September 3, 2009
The Forgotten Way of Jesus is both a map for the person just beginning to look in God's direction and a fresh exploration of Jesus for those who are hungry for a better kind of Christian faith. Drawing from his own insights and those of thinkers like C.S. Lewis and N.T. Wright, author Fran Leeman invites the reader onto a fresh journey across the pages of the Gospels. In The Forgotten Way of Jesus you'll find a critique of the modern versions of Jesus that abound: the Jesus of conservative politics, the personal-happiness Jesus, the fire insurance Jesus, and the Jesus who offers a quick ticket into heaven rather than a new life. Perhaps the most striking thing about The Forgotten Way of Jesus is its insistence that the heart of the Christian journey is not found in merely "accepting Jesus", but in actually awakening to the things about God, the world, and our own hearts to which we have been blind. And for the one who awakens, life and freedom await.

About the Author

Francis Leeman is the lead pastor at LifeSpring Community Church in Plainfield, Illinois (www.yourlifespring.org), which he and his wife Linda began in 1993. He was instrumental in founding New Life for Haiti, a wholistic effort to live the good news of the Kingdom of God among the people of Haiti's southern peninsula, and currently serves as its Director (www.newlifeforhaiti.org). He also leads a collaborative effort to create better discipleship and small group materials called Walking Sunlit Fields (walkingsunlitfields.com). Before going to seminary and leading LifeSpring, Fran worked as a baker, a barber, a cab driver, and a pizza maker. Fran and Linda have two grown children (Luke and Joanna), a great son-in-law (Steven), and a lovable but often bad cat (Arwen). Fran loves to read, cook, fish, build things, grow vegetables, ride his '96 Virago 750, lead worship with his guitar, and occasionally sing Folsom Prison Blues (Thanks, Johnny).

I have often thought that the view we have of Jesus today is like a long lost painting found in an attic. It is encrusted with dust and mold and its true colors don't come through. It provides a dim view of the original. Over the centuries the picture of Jesus has become less clear but Fran Leeman does a great job of peeling away some of the layers in this book. It is good for someone taking a first look as well as those of us who have been studying the painting for a while.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Jesus of the here and now, June 2, 2010

This review is from: The Forgotten Way of Jesus: What if we got him wrong, but he had it right? (Paperback)
Having been brought up in a church where heaven is the reason to follow Jesus, I found myself years ago wondering what following Jesus had to offer for me now. As I've grown older and studied the gospels more closely, I've come to realize that following Jesus is about finding joy now, and about making the world a better place to live for all. This book rightly proclaims that Jesus is more concerned with transformation and not conversion. Most evangelical churches focus on people being converted to the Christian religion, while ignoring an emphasis on people actually living the way of Jesus. In "The Forgotten Way of Jesus" Francis Leeman examines this idea in depth. He makes the case that Jesus didn't come to start a new religion, but to invite people into a way of life that leads to love, joy, and peace for his followers. Leeman's passion for this way of life comes through in these pages.

Anytime a book like this is written, there are those in the Church who scoff at such notions that God is more concerned with who we are here and now than he is about people finding their way to heaven when they die. This book will inevitably upset some people, but if you are the type of person that has found Jesus captivating, but are skeptical about the Jesus of traditional evangelicalism, then this book is a must read for you. I highly recommend it.
